On Saturday we let you know that crime writer and neighbor of JK Rowling, Ian Rankin, speculated that she was "writing her Edinburgh detective novel" in city cafes. In a new interview
today with Mr. Rankin, he now states that:
This is a joke that got out of hand.
There were 600 people in the audience, and only one person didn't laugh.
Meanwhile Emma Schlesinger, speaking for Rowling's literary agent, Christopher Little called the rumors "unfounded" and:
JK Rowling is taking a well-earned break following the English language publication of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows and there are no firm plans as yet as to what her next book may be.
Since the original quote of Mr. Rankin has spread like wildfire over the web let us hope that this new information will put this matter to rest.

I didn't think that rumor was true anyway. JK has said in many interviews that she wants to take a long break.

I kind of thought it was a false rumor, considering I knew she'd be taking a well-earned break from writing. Either way, I'm looking forward to see what she'll come up with next, as she's such a brilliant author.

on JK's new novel: "This is a joke that got out of hand" - I should say so. I was surprised that she would be writing so soon, not taking a longer break. I also thought the choice of a detective novel was rather cheesy - so should have suspected a joke.

I think speculated is the main word here, he really didn't know for sure. I hope people stop jumping to conclusions about JK Rowling and her future. It is amazing the amount of press she is getting after the books have been released and she is just trying to relax and live her life.

Well this is a great example of a rumour of one small thing someone said that got out of hand. I am not worried JK will at some point write another book, hopefully that HP encyclopedia.

Haha! Well I didn't think she would be writing this soon. So I'm not suprised or upset or anything. JKR said herself she'd be taking a break.
Remember it was only a rumour.. don't take it so seriously next time.

I sort of think that a lot of people are taking this too seriously - I know we're all massive fans and would really love for Jo to write something else for us to enjoy, but in all honesty I found it funny - and I think we're supposed to as well. Well said, by the way, Siobhan684. Besides having a very good point that we need to chill out, we also have the same name so score!

Poor bloke! He just said one tiny little off-the-cuff remark, and it blew-out to an international news scandal!
JK Rowling can't even sneeze without half the world knowing, let alone sit innocently in a cafe!

Hahaaha, how they knew only one person laughed makes me laugh the hardest. Well, I knew she would be having a well deserved break, and why shouldn't she? Of course, it would be nice to have another book in a year, but she deserves all the time in the world. She gave us the best gift, so we should give her the best give we all can give; time.

This was a joke. Whats that Rankin guy playing at? I thought it was rather odd though. She said she was taking time off, which is understandable. And she really hasn't said what genre she was writing after the HP informational book, or encyclopedia. I don't think it was funny, and most certainly not something to laugh about, us fans take that stuff seriously! :/
