Scholastic, the U.S. publisher of the Harry Potter books, announced the final schools that will be participating in J.K. Rowling's Open Book Tour. Schools from Los Angeles and New Orleans round out the three areas in which students will listen to Ms. Rowling read from the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, answer questions about the entire series, and sign a book for every student.
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin welcomed
Scholastic to New Orleans and said:
As we continue to accelerate our recovery, our children must be at the forefront of our efforts. This program communicates to them that they are important to us and that we want to ensure that they have a high quality of life. By focusing on New Orleans, Ms. Rowling and Scholastic demonstrate their commitment to our youth and our rebuilding.
Two days ago, Scholastic also announced
a list of 40 schools who would be participating in Los Angeles. LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer III welcomed Scholastic to Los Angeles and said:
Literacy is a number one priority for all our children and we are always looking for ways to motivate our students to enjoy reading. Our ongoing partnership with Scholastic and its commitment to schools, teachers and children has played an integral role in achieving our literacy goals. I would like to thank J.K. Rowling and Scholastic for including students from the Los Angeles Unified School District on Ms. Rowling’s Open Book Tour.
Congratulations to all the schools.

That's great for the kids in these cities! I have family in New Orleans. It would be wonderful if one of my cousins could attend this event. This city deserves something good, after everything they have been through in the past 2 years. My aunt still isn't in her house!

Why can't Ms. Rowling come to other countries as well? Her fans are spread all over the world, not just US or UK. I have to say that this is kinda unfair. She has NEVER gone anywhere else apart from those two countries.
*sigh*

Yet another reason why JKR is the coolest author on the planet. So glad that she is going to New Orleans to help support the kids there. Los Angeles is just far enough away that my kid will not have a chance to participate there. Bummer.
