In an upcoming exclusive interview
with our friend Garth Franklin at Dark Horizons, actor Jim Broadbent confirms he has been chosen to portray Horace Slughorn in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which coincidentally began principal filming today in the UK.
The actor, who was recently seen in Hot Fuzz, also said he has been going to costume fittings and that his new character is quite comical:
"Who am I? He's called Horace Slughorn. He's a retired teacher of magic who's drawn back out of retirement because he's got some secrets they need in the battle against the Deatheaters..."
Broadbent will also be seen in 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Cyrstal Skull.

Jim Broadbent is nothing short of a brillant actor; however, I don't feel that he is suited to this part. Slughorn is fully discribed as almost like a waldrus. I think that a better choice could be have been made.

At first he didn't seem right for the part, but after about three seconds I decided that he should be a great Slughorn. I'm more excited to see him in Indy 4!

Yes, he definitely looks like the guy who plays Fudge.
Hope he's on a high calorie diet or will have a good size fat suit to wear. Here's hoping that he does a great job!

He is going to wear a fat suit. He mentioned it when asked about the costume fittings. He said they are "Tweedy sort of things with a bit of padding. He's an older man, I'm aging up again."

Hm... I've never heard of him. Hopefully he'll do a good job, but so far the casting has been absolutely fanstastic, so I'm not worried.

Geez, he makes it sound as though the filming of the whole thing will take eight months. That's a long time for anyone. I'm glad they've started, though, as I am eager to see the new movie. Is the ballpark release fall or winter 2008?
Good casting decision, by the way, in my opinion.

This is really cool!! The only thing is, I've always pictured Slughorn much uglier than this guy, I guess I pictured him ugly because of his name, SLUGhorn, but this guy looks like he could do the job. (I've never seen him before in my whole life, though).

Wow, he looks almost exactly like the Horace Slughorn I'd always imagined, only a little thinner! I hope the other new characters in HBP are cast just as well.
And yay, they started filming today! *dances*

I cannot wait to see Horace Slughorn on the big screen. I have this very amusing picture in my head of what he'd look and sound like and I can't wait to see if he's close to the directors perception.
Principal filming begins today, huh? Yes!!!!

Wow, he certainly does look like Horace Slughorn. I'm glad they got someone that looks like the character. Wow, he's going to be in Idiana Jones, I hope that doesn't interfere with Harry Potter, and vice versa.

I cant really see him as Slughorn, I always pictured him a lot fatter and rounder in general... with like a hige mustache. I'm pretty sure this is the description in the book.. or maybe my brain and the books have meshed, ha i dont know.

To be honest, I've never heard of him before, so I can't really comment on what sort of Slughorn he will portray, and whether he'll be suitable for the part or not. That, I'll just have to wait and see.
But, by looking at his pictures alone, he's not quite the type of Slughorn that I imagined when I read the books...
