In an upcoming exclusive interview
with our friend Garth Franklin at Dark Horizons, actor Jim Broadbent confirms he has been chosen to portray Horace Slughorn in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which coincidentally began principal filming today in the UK.
The actor, who was recently seen in Hot Fuzz, also said he has been going to costume fittings and that his new character is quite comical:
"Who am I? He's called Horace Slughorn. He's a retired teacher of magic who's drawn back out of retirement because he's got some secrets they need in the battle against the Deatheaters..."
Broadbent will also be seen in 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Cyrstal Skull.

To be honest, I've never heard of him before, so I can't really comment on what sort of Slughorn he will portray, and whether he'll be suitable for the part or not. That, I'll just have to wait and see.
But, by looking at his pictures alone, he's not quite the type of Slughorn that I imagined when I read the books...

I have seen him in Hot Fuzz and he was great. As long as they make him fat and look somewhat like a toad i will be happy.

By the look of him in the photos he doesnt look like what i thought slughorn would look like. As long as they fatten him up and make him look like Slughorn he will be fine by me.

I did not imagine Slughorn like this, but Broadbent seems likely to match the character. I've never heard of him. I hope he will manage to render the comical aspect of Slughorn, he's a very interesting character.

I was rooting for Bob Hoskins. *sighs* Jim Broadbent is just as good in my opinion and it is for the greater good. The greater good.

Had thought Bob Hoskins would get it but Mr. Broadbent is fine. He played Tom Felton's father Pod Clock in the Borrowers movie.

I had imagined a much smaller actor portraying Slughorn, like Bob Hoskins. I think Broadbent is at least 6 feet tall, maybe taller. But he is a good actor and am sure he will do an excellent job of portraying Horace.

Good to know more about the cast of HBP. It should be interesting to see him as the part.
He does not really appear to be what I pictured for the character. [theonewhomust*benamed]
Me either but I am sure he will end up fitting the part.
He looks a bit like Fudge from the movies.[Gryffindor's* prefect ]
That what I thought as well.
