With filming of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince currently in production and only one more movie left to be made in the franchise, director Guillermo Del Toro voiced his thoughts
recently on the set of his upcoming movie, Hellboy, that he would make a Potter movie if he could do it on his own terms.
They came to me once, for the third one [Prisoner of Azkaban]. I've read them all, and when I read the books before the movies were done, I always pictured Charles Dickens - they were very Dickens-ian. The situation of Harry Potter reminded me a lot of Pip from Great Expectations. I saw they as deeper, more creaky, more corroded; then [the stories] were textured very differently when the first two movies came out. They were so bright and happy and full of light, that I wasn't interested.
Speaking about the last movies, he said:
They seem to be getting eerie and darker ... If they come back to me, I'll think about it.

He sounds like he could be a good director for the last HP movie, but the only thing that scares me is "only on his terms". I totally agree with Brittany Radcliffe. He didn't come up with Harry Potter, JK Rowling did. If he were to direct the last movie, he needs to be guided by JK Rowling. It shouldn't be only his choice what scene to put in, or what to take out, or what a character should say, it needs to be JK Rowling's!
The first 2 HP movies were too child like, I definitely agree on that. I guess they had to make them child like and happy because their characters were 11 and 12 years old in the books. During PoA, they became teens, everything gets more serious and darker when you're a teen. I like that Alfonso went darker for the 3rd movie. I've been saying that I didn't want him to direct the last HP movie, but I've been thinking about this, and Alfonso did sort of make the 3rd movie really good. Now that I think of it, I liked the 3rd one better than the first 2 and GoF. I would like to see Del Toro direct the last movie, but I think he has to give a little bit. He should let the author of the books voice her opinion on the movie and help him see things the way she see's them(if she wants a scene to be worked out a certain way, he should let her give him her opinion). If he doesn't like it, hopefully he'll let her work things out with him.

babel I know that Hellboy's not the only movie he's made, but I just used that as an example. I can't see Pan's Labyrinth because it's rated R but I've seen some of the movies from flixster. I think he'll be just as bad as Alfonso Cuaron and he'll make the last movie rated R, which would get rid of half the watching population.

LET HIM DO IT! I don't care about his terms. I love Del Toro's 'Pan's Labyrinth'! Each of the released HP movies has been a disappoinment to me, except for PoA (a little).
Let the DH be a huge success not because of the popularity of the books but because of the quality of the movie. I don't think Warner Bros. really cares about the movies' caliber as long as they rake in their expected monetary quota.
It is so dissatisfying to see that the movies couldn't be at par with the books. Why couldn't they be like the LotR?
So my request to WB is to beg Del Toro to do it.
Bwahahah, I wish.

Ronmiones Wedding Planner, you have a point too. If he's to direct DH, I'd like him to heed JK's opinions and not just let his imagination go a-wild.
But I'm very sure that I won't be disappointed if he's going to do it. :)

He's correct in saying that the first two movies were very bright and happy. They are getting more dark and complicated, but I have a problem with him wanting to do the movie on his own terms. They need to be very careful about who will direct the final film because I would hate to see the wrong director ruin it and besides, as for Del Toro wanting to do the movie on his own terms, I don't think Warner Brothers would ever allow that.

I love del Toro and he has such a wonderful imagination. Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite films, but it isn't an easy one to watch. He'd bring a lot to DH, but I'm iffy about him directing it. Then again, that movie would probably be more enjoyable than the first two and GoF, in my opinion.

Who is this guy?
It seems to me that the entire HP series was a children's story that grows into a rite of passage journey.
It deals with mature themes, but to suggest it should be presented as a horror movie - or some such nonsense - is taking it a little far.
My advice to this director is to re-think his concept.

Pan's Labyrinth was a bit too gruesome. I will not ever watch it again. The guy having his face slit open was too much. I think Cuaron knows how to blend the dark and the light. Children of Men is a great example of this.
I vote for Cuaron. I am also pretty scared what Yates is going to do with HBP. I hated his direction in OOTP. That movie should have been great but it was not, far from it.

I love the images those words bring. At first I was put-off by his prononouncement that he would do HP on his terms, but after hearing his ideas, I think he'd make a great director for the final movie.

Well, I don't know of this director. I honestly don't pay much attention to the directors. So I guess deep down inside I just don't much care what he thinks or what his "terms" are. The movies have been great from the sunnier films in the beginning to the more grim and darker ones later. Too me they seem to be a logical transition from the innocence of childhood and being niave to the more aware teens/young adults that the lead characters are becoming with the stories.

Well, a bit silly thing to say that he wanted to direct it on his own terms, there could not be such thing in case of the Harry Potter universe, that is so subtly written and has a huge, brilliant plot. I mean what was he thinking? I hope they won't consider him, we already had it all messed up by taking that Cuaron-thingy... (yuck)
And the last of the films has to be in hands of a director we fully trust.

Shouldn't he keep his nose out!! I think David Yates, Chris Columbus, Mike Newell have all done a great job and their respective parts were wonderful in their own ways, although I didn't like Cuaron's one that much. And among these David is the best one to do the 7th one.

Normally a director who wants to tackle a project on his own terms is a good thing. However, I don't know if he'd be able to create his "own" Harry Potter film and still stay true to the series and canon.

I agree, but yet I do not know if I would want him to direct the last HP film. If he wants to do it on "his own terms" than that is just ruining the series. And besides, the films are getting darker. What does he expect? Don't get me wrong-- he did a fantastic job with Pan's Labyrinth, but I don't think he would do HP justice.

Guillermo del Toro would be a great choice. I'm still hoping that Alfonso will come back for the seventh and final film, but I would be happy with del Toro, too. He's right that the films are getting darker and the seventh should be the scariest of all of the films - I wonder if that will influence him?
I suppose there's a chance that David Yates will do the seventh film. He seems to be happy in his current spot.
