With filming of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince currently in production and only one more movie left to be made in the franchise, director Guillermo Del Toro voiced his thoughts
recently on the set of his upcoming movie, Hellboy, that he would make a Potter movie if he could do it on his own terms.
They came to me once, for the third one [Prisoner of Azkaban]. I've read them all, and when I read the books before the movies were done, I always pictured Charles Dickens - they were very Dickens-ian. The situation of Harry Potter reminded me a lot of Pip from Great Expectations. I saw they as deeper, more creaky, more corroded; then [the stories] were textured very differently when the first two movies came out. They were so bright and happy and full of light, that I wasn't interested.
Speaking about the last movies, he said:
They seem to be getting eerie and darker ... If they come back to me, I'll think about it.

He's right, the first two movies were too 'happy', too 'bright' and child-like, when the actual storyline is much more complicated and darker than it showed on the first two films. I think he could be good for the last one.

I know where he's coming from but there is no such thing as "a director's own terms" in the world of HP. He has to get the story right or that's it. But at least he's read all of them and understands that they are more complicated and dark than what Columbus originally did with them.
But I'm still holding out for Cuaron to return considering HE decided to do PoA and took the series towards the proper darkness.
Make sure you know your vulgarities before using them, zues. And no, del Toro is not one either. He happened to direct Pan's Labyrinth last year, which was a quality project. Use the internet and do some research.

Interesting comments. Sounds like he might take them in a different direction. Though he feels they are darker, isn't mainly because the books actually are getting darker?

The books ARE getting darker. They have strated to deal with more problematic and real situations. Angst and reality are growing on the films, maybe he could be the next director.

I think that the movies got darker and Cuaron started that with PoA, he is right when he said the first two movies were too light but I think JK wanted that in the books by making them get much darker as they went on until DH when people are dying.
I haven't heard of him before, but if he does get the job for DH, I hope he makes it dark and eerie because thats what makes the films excting and interesting to watch.

I really like it when they are 'full of light'! They are better that way. I don't really care if he directs or not because I've never heard of him.

No, they should even consider him if he wants to direct on "his own terms". You direct on the HP Fans terms.

I dont like the fact that he says he will direct it on his terms. to be honest with you the script is already written hence the books and there is a progression going. i dont like when a director just picks up something and does what they want with it. No offensse Curan was a awesome director and i am glad that he made the movie darker but he made his own movie under the HP license he didnt necessarily adapt the third book and that was the only problem that i had with him so if this guy is going to do it he just needs to remember that ultimately J.K. is the director and he cant change the books. he may feel that he is doing people a favor by changing this and that to make the movie more appealing loyal fans want to see the books on the big screen not a totally different movie

Yeah. I would not want him to direct the 7th movie because of his idea of "own terms". There is no "your terms" it's our terms, books terms, and JKR's terms. He has no say, he just directs.

Oh wow! I never knew that they had asked them. I agree that the first two movies were a bit too cheerful, really, but I thought that they did an alright sort of job. The last three movies, though, have introduced a much more serious world of Harry Potter, and they did this rightfully so. I think that the darkness grows with the series, so they really did a fairly decent job on the movies.

Hmmm.... I see his point. Those first two movies were so much different than the next three. Anyone think he'll be approached to direct the last movie?
I love Great Expectations, by the way.

No way in my right mind would I allow him to direct the last one. He directed Hellboy and all these terrible movies that weren't even blockbuster movie hits. I hate his directing and it's not HIS way that we want, it's JK Rowling's way. The reason the books were cheerful and pompous in the beginning was, in my opinion, to show the major contrast that it is now. I mean, from movie one to movie five, you can see how all the characters have grown more and the mood is completely different. And if you ask me, the first two books were more cheerful than the rest so yeah, I think he's an utter retard.

When I first read the title of this news post I thought "Wow, that's really arogant" but now that I've read it I see that's not how he meant it, I still don't think the first two movies were too happy or light. The first two books really weren't that dark, because things weren't that bad then, even if bad things happened.
I don't want him to direct the last one though, I've wanted M. Night Shyamalan from the beginning, he's the only director I really like and admire.

SiriusBlacksGodDaughter: Hellboy's not the only movie's he's made. Look up Pan's Labyrinth and watch it and be amazed, because it was basically the best movie of 2006.
For those of you wondering who the heck this guy is, He's the guy who made PAN"S LABYRINTH, and he's one of the (I think it was called the Three Amigos or something; originally it was George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and some other guy...) TRIO in the 2006 Oscars along side Alfonso Cuaron (for Children of Men) and another guy I can't remember at the moment. If you watch Pan's labyrinth, you'll see why some people like me are absolutely fine if he's going to direct the seventh Potter.

I think the darker side to it he could do well, but saying he would only do it, if on his own terms...makes me really nervous...I think if he stuck to the book...He might be alright at it....but still he makes me nervous....

I´d like the last movie directed by a guy that´s read the series and enjoyed them, too.
He seems to have given it a bit of thought.
Mmmm, whoever does it, they better do it well.

I dont think that is such a good idea. Especuially with the last movie-that has to be by the book i think, there is no other way to to get around it. Every detail is basically important and creative lisence used to loosely would upset me and a lot of other harcore potter fans.

Pan's Labyrinth was such a good quality movie, it's the best foreign movie I've ever seen. Now with the knowledge that this director is the one who directed Pan's Labyrinth I think it will be fantastic if he directs Deathly Hallows. On his own terms may just mean as long as he can add his own personal style to the movie, as each director did. He'd be perfect for Deathly Hallows. He captures the dark and eerie perfectly, which is essential for Deathly Hallows, it has to be dark. I really hope he gets to be director for it.
