While promoting his new movie Love in the Time of Cholera, director Mike Newell
spoke about his experiences
working on the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie by stating that he would have not changed a thing and the fact that J.K. Rowling did not tell him anything about the last book, Deathly Hallows.
Director Mike Newell on meeting Jo:
No. Absolutely nothing. I asked her and she wouldn't [say a thing]. She was very funny about that. I asked her questions [and] she simply said "I'm not answering them. Not that. Not that. Not that."
I remember we went up to see her in Edinburgh and her little daughter was in the room and she started to say cute things like, "Are you going to do this mummy? And [Jo] said "Sweetheart, why don't you go into the other room and play?"
Newell on if he would have do anything different with Goblet of Fire:
There was something in the book that was absolutely glorious and would produce this great driven vehicle which would really hum along. It was a God given thriller. It's like North by Northwest. That's how the strong story in Goblet worked. I thought that was a colossal way of structuring the story, and would work really well. You would dilute that if you went into all the subplots.
There's a whole storyline for [Hermione] that's all about free the house elf, and it was okay. But that was going to be shunted into a second movie I couldn't see what was going to keep that second movie afloat.

I liked Goblet of Fire. It wasn't my favourite Potter film but the thing I wish they had done differently were the scenes after the third task when Harry returned. They totally butchered the ending. In the book, Harry was basically "shell shocked". I wish they had left in the scene where Mrs. Weasley holds Harry and he almost cries. We never get to see Harry be treated so tenderly like that, to show his emotional side. It's always neglect, abuse and ridicule. He is, after all, still just a boy who needs love, affection and guidance.

Interesting interview. I love hearing what they all have to say, especially about how they edit the book storylines to fit into the movie format.

I think SPEW should have been in the movie, because I think what Hermione was trying to convince Harry and Ron of all along was revealed in Deathly Hallows when Kreature made that amazing transformation, for being treated with kindness. SPEW is what Hermione was passionate about, and that is a character development which I thought was important and I really love the house elf's.

Yes it is a very long book. But S.P.E.W. needed to be included because that is why Hermione finally kisses Ron. Admittedly he could not have know that. But know for the kiss to remain the way it was in the book they are going to have to put introduce S.P.E.W. It will be a little odd if they included it know because there is no Winky to make Hermione start S.P.E.W.

I just saw a preview today for Love in the time of Cholera and was impressed with what I saw. Looks good... unfortunatly I was a bit disapointed with Newell's interpretation of GoF. I liked the movie but I didn't love it. I'm a firm believer that the movies have to be appreciated in a different way than the books..but there was just this weird disconnect for me.

I actually really liked Goblet of Fire. I realize most subplot stuff has to be left out. He did a good job on the movie.
