The French translated version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, (Harry Potter et les Reliques de la Mort), was released this past weekend and today the publishers, Gallimard, stated that over 1.15 million copies of the 2.3 million copies book were sold
. Back in October 2005 the sixth book in the series, Half-Blood Prince sold 800,000 copies in the first 24 hours.
Meanwhile, over one million copies of the German translation, Harry Potter und die Heiligtümer des Todes, were sold on Saturday in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, an increase of 13.5% more books than Half-Blood Prince. Thanks to Jonas from HPNews
for the translation.

No surprise here. How could someone not read the last book, if they read the first. I would have been surprised if they did not sell well.

Rock on German and French speaking HP fans! Glad that the book is still being bought after all the fanfare and hoopla, some of it considered negative, not to mention the massive spoilers. Enjoy!

It would be excellent, if you were studying one of these languages, to buy the translation and refer back to the English version for comparison. I might have to buy the German translation ...

I'm reading the french version at the moment. ^_^ I've also read the english version, and I must say that Jean-François Ménard (who translated all HP plus other great books) did a great job. I don't like the french covers though.
But anyway, it's great, to me it always feels like reading a new HP book. So now I've got 14 books, plus 3 HP related books, plus other HP books from other countries.
And about a gigazillion other HP related stuff. XD

I would expect them to sell, especially the French ones - I read in the paper that this kid got arrested for creating a French translation to it because his friends wanted to read it so bad.

Jeez! People love Harry Potter, and I can't believe they had to wait THAT long. It's like, "Oh, well, the whole world knows that Harry didn't die and blah blah blah-" "Oh wait, not the foregin countries, they have to wait for the translation." Sucks for them!

I'm not surprised by the numbers, Harry Potter fandom is global. I just hope those countries that had to wait so long for their book didn't have everything ruined by spoilers from countries who already knew how the series ends.
