Have you ever wondered who else might have been cast to play Prof. Snape in the Harry Potter movies? Well, in a recent interview actor Tim Roth
mentioned that he had been offered the role but decided to do Tim Burton's version of Planet of the Apes.
Mr. Roth states
:
I was going to do both films [Potter and Planet of the Apes]. We rigged it so that I could fly back and forth. They figured out the schedule but it just got to be overwhelming in my mind. My kids really liked the books. They were really into me doing it, but the idea of being an ape with Tim was too good.
I would have made [Snape] a very different guy. But in the end I think it was the right decision since Alan’s had some success with the character.

Like this is news? I've known this for years. And I've thought it's amusing for years. One cannot believe Roth passed up Snape! Come on! Look what the character turned into - one of the most important characters in the series! And furthermore, he would have made Snape a different guy? How so as Alan Rickman has basically played the character by the book nearly, though with a little variation. And what this comment about how Rickman has played Snape to "some success" - try lots of success!!!

MWbashfulAR - Yeah that last line didn't sit too well me me neither. He's had "some success." Sheesh. He's had way more success as Snape than Roth did with Planet of the Apes!
I can't picture anyone else as Snape. When I re-read the books I totally hear Alan's voice during Snape's dialogue. But yeah, this is old news, I've known this for a long time.

I've never heard of Tim Roth before, I wish I knew how both would turn out. Alan Rickman is a very good actor for the part.

Hard to imagine anyone else other than Rickman at this point. I think the best choice was ultimately made, and will stand the test of time.

Well, the last line wasn't too enthralling.
Mr. Rickman has had nothing but pure success out of portraying Severus Snape.
I cannnot imagine anyone better for the part.

Oh I think it would have been interesting to see his take on Snape... much as I adore Alan he's not what I have in my mind. I hope Tim gets some other part in HP, although there aren't that many left now.

Alan Rickman IS Severus Snape! He totally owns the role. Nobody else has the presence and voice to carry it off. The films would have greatly suffered with anyone else in the roll. ^..^

I can't really imagine taking Planet of the Apes over the Potter films. Tim Burton aside, didn't he realize that he's probably be signing on for seven of them?
I've never been as crazy as the rest of the world with Alan Rickman as Snape (I love love in Die Hard, S&S, Love Actually), but he's grown on me...kind of like greasy mold. At this point, I can't imagine anyone else making Harry's life so miserable.

So... then may it be assumed that Alan was only second choice? What? Are you kidding? I don't know how to respond to that. It's just absurd! "Some success," says Roth. I say Roth is suffering from Loser's Lurgy.

I absolutely love how Alan Rickman's played Snape, and so I'm very relieved to hear that Tim Roth decided not to play him, no offense to him or anything. But c'mon, can you honestly imagine anyone else as Snape?
