Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's latest book, Tales of the Beedle the Bard, sold
this morning at Sotheby's for £1,950,000 ($3,980,128.89).
JK watched the event via the internet and said:
I'm stunned and ecstatic. This will mean so much to the children desperately in need of help. It means Christmas has come early for me.
All proceeds from the auction will benefit The Children's Voice
charity.
UPDATE: You can now view a video
interview with JKR in which she discusses, ever so briefly, what she may do next.
UPDATE II: We now know
that Amazon purchased the book and they have updated their web site with a press release
:
Even before establishing her charity, J.K. Rowling had done the world a rare and immeasurably valuable service--enlarging forever our concept of the way books can touch people--and in particular children--in modern times. When we deliver Harry Potter, kids are camped out at the post box, and the drivers get hugs.

That is incredible! Wonderful news for the charity. I wish I could buy a copy from the print shop/publishers! I don't want a fancy hancy written one. I just want to read the stories. I bet they could triple the amount for the charity if a publisher would work with them on printing the book.

Darn! I had money enough to buy Tales of Beedle the Bard, but I only had $3,970,000 Million (or £1,949,000). Life on a budget CAN be difficult, especially here at Christmas.

Wow that's a lot of money! I think I would faint if I ever heard that a book I've written sold for 4 million dollars! Its great that the money is going to charity. The charity that gets that money will be very thankful indeed. Those kids that Jo supports are some of the luckiest kids in the universe.

Merlin's Beard!!! This is a great news.
I can't believe that the book fetched so much money.
The children at the charity home will celebrate this Christmas with great joy.
Hope I could celebrate Christmas after reading 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard.'
It would be great if the book was published.
Hope I could read it.

Wow, that is an incredible amount of money! I thought it would sell for £50,000 to £100,000.
I guess Amazon have made plenty of money from the harry potter series, so they can afford to pay such a big price for it.
Shame that the public won't get to read the book though.

The amount of money spent on the book is unimaginable. I heard on "The Today Show" this morning that it went for 40 times its expected value. I'm glad the money is going to a good cause. That was a smart PR/advertising move on Amazon's part- they look like heroes for giving so much to charity and now the company gets to own the book!

Now thats sweet. I don't think J.K. Rowling has really ever gotten caught up in all of the fame and money. She seems like she is very grounded and is always thinking of ways she can do things to help out charities.

I really wish she would publish it! I mean other wise somehow its going to get put on the internet. She could make even more for the charities if she published it, than having it end up on the internet and people reading it anyways.
