Rumor alert: 'Deathly Hallows' to be 2 films, Spielberg to direct? Popular (8040)

JANUARY 14, 2008 at 8:02 AM

Posted by GERI
Source: Daily Mail

UPDATE: Some of this has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros.

This past weekend a storyopens in new window hit the web stating that the last film in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be shot as two films. While this story originally appeared in a British newspaper it has spread like wildfire around the internet. You may remember that a similar rumor appeared online while filming of Order of the Phoenix was taking place.

According to the article the reason given by an unnamed source is that splitting the two films is artistic rather than financial reasons. The article also states that Warner Bros. is rumored to be thinking of Steven Spielberg as director of the last movie.

UPDATE: Empire Online reportsopens in new window that the WB has let them know that "no decision has been made about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and that Steve Kloves will be returning for the last picture but that no script has been started due to the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike.

I wish they would make it one really long movie with 2 intermissions (= then you would see the true Harry Potter fans! willing to stick it out that long, it would be like a dream for most of us!

I think a split DH could be done. If you're going on the Lord of the Rings style, they broke up the journey for the fellowship and then Frodo and Sam. The second movie ends with them still on a journey. But it's also do-able as one movie as well. Let's hope for a longer final movie.

As for directors, S.S. is amazing, no doubt, and it would be interesting to see what he would bring and how much Warner Bros. would allow him to do.

In terms of directors, I love Alfonso Curon in just about every movie he's done besides PoA. Children of Men was fabulous. How about Joe Wright? Besides the fact he's suddenly popular, he did a graet job adapting Pride and Prejudice and Atonement. They both stay very close to the movie.

Whatever happens, I'm a sucker because the books are done and I want to draw out the Harry Potter process as long as possible.

That would be interesting if they split it up I suppose. It would take care of trying to condense the movie into like 2 hours. But what would they call it? Harry Potter Part 1 and Part 2?

I read this in the Herald Sun! It sounds too good to be true. But, it would be AWESOME if they are really going to split it into two movies. I think they'd be able to fit a whole heaps more, meaning us fans would be a lot happier. They'd make way more money too. I liked Curaon's style, but I'm happy with David Yates.

i have very mixed views about this, i mean it would solve the having to cut out too much and condense it down too much, and they'd make so much more money from it BUT.......how long a gap between each film would there be??? i don't think i could wait a whole year!!! that's be tooooo long and i think if they left it a whole year people would loose interest and they'd risk loosing mmoney!!

I had a long winding comment but I just lost it through an accidental pressing of F5. The leftovers of the comment pretty much say:
*Eww Spielberg
*No way to dividing it, imagine "Harry Potter and the" & "Deathly Hallows" -_-
*All the directors have done well with A) the script they had and B)have brought their own vision.
*Maybe bring back one of the directors we have already seen? Yates and Columbus have done 2 each, maybe CuarĂ³n or Newell could do well with the (skeleton of a) script Kloves will supply (bring back Goldman!).
*I suggest maybe soemone who is more of an emotional movie maker rather than a fantasy or adventure-type director.
*I woudl also love to see another british Director, Newell & Yates are the only ones so far and, ignoring the fact an American company is creating it, the story and the movie should be British.
*Maybe a new director, someoen who has done B-Grade movies who could do well on an A-Grade movie.
*I like Tim Burton, and he is a very good story-teller. He focuses on the character rather than the fantasy, but the story and the world they are in is always seen perfectly.

Blah, I'll re-write my original one soon and psot it :P

I don't think have deathly hallows in 2 movies is a good idea. There are 7 books therefore there should be 7 movies. I understand that there is a lot that has to be left out of the films cus there is so much happening in the books but if Deathly Hallows was the only one made into 2 films then i think the other movies would be spoiled because they wouldn't have had as much in them. As long as the most important stuff from the books get written into the film then i'm happy.

If Spielberg did do the last movie/movies..XD I assure you they would be UPROAR if he even slightly americanised Harry Potter. The fanbase is too loyal. JK Rowling too proud to let her work be ravaged. And thankgoodness for that too.

I say if it is too movies, they'd best put as much in as possible, either that or it will be like a 4 hour long movie XD Which really is fine by me. But sadly, in this media driven, ratings obsessed society we live in.. thats highly unlikely to happen as the less hardcore of us fans wont want to sit through 4 hours of HP.

I don't really know what's my opinion on this... Spielberg? Not likely I think... :/ But I would be okay with him (anyone but Cuaron...). :) Two parts? Why now? The fourth could've been two parts too, but they decided against it for some reason, if memory serves me well. Though, it would be nice to have as many details as possible, and having to pay two tickets, doesn't matter, I would enjoy the "double ride". Kloves? Okay. I like him. :)

So in conclusion: Spielberg or not, two parts or one, with or without Kloves, JUST GIVE Me HP MOVIES !!! :D I can't wait to see a trailer for HBP!!!! I hope it'll come soon, around may maybe?

It would be good if they did DH in two parts. There is so much in the book that is important and shouldn't be left out of the movie. If they do it in two parts more can be included.
I also don't want Steven Spielberg to direct. I like his films but he is wrong for HP.

2 Movies?????? Steven Spielberg??? NOOOOO!!!!

He would do a terrible job, no offence, but not him. I don't feel like he would be right for this job. Wasn't he offered it in the begining and he wanted to make Harry Potter animated? That just makes me not want him even more. He should just stick to muppets.
Also, about the two movies thing, what would they call it? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, then Part 2? That alittle weird, however, i do understand they do have a lot to put in the movies, and with fans always so upset they cut things out, what can they do? I think they should fallow a similar path as Lord of the Rings, put enough in the theater release, but also make an extend addition so us fans can see what we want to.

Looks like we're officially in "get Harry Potter fans' nerves up" mode. Look out for more of these as the year goes along. Drat the writers' strike!

Spielberg? Sorry, but I say no, he shouldn't lower himself to do it.

Double movie? Where would you cut it? If it comes down to that, just leave out all the camping and travelling.

Calm down guys, this is still three years away!

I will be very very very very disappointed if they do this.
Unless they plan to put every moment in the fil and release them on back-to-back weekends. There is plenty of traveling that can be edited. I don't like this idea at all. If they could put OOTP in one film they can DH. Just do the last 5chapters right and the movie will be golden.

And it would be wonderful if Spielberg directs the last movie and if he does then I will surely miss Yates being the director.

I agree with Squims.

Making it into two films and using Spielberg are both HORRID ideas. I've never been so angry reading a news article.

If you are going to use an american director, get Burton in. He would be perfect for this genre.

And I'm happy to have the movie 3 hours long. Its not like a terrible amount of stuff really happened in the last book. Lots of running and running, then some action. It can easily be put into the one long movie.

Just as long as they have a different director to movie 5 and 6. Ergh. I waited until the DVD was on sale before I bought it. It still isn't growing on me.

It would be interesting if after finishing the series, some time later others would also make films of it. Different style different interpretations... Just playing with it.
