UPDATE: Some of this has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros.
This past weekend a story
hit the web stating that the last film in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be shot as two films. While this story originally appeared in a British newspaper it has spread like wildfire around the internet. You may remember that a similar rumor appeared online while filming of Order of the Phoenix was taking place.
According to the article the reason given by an unnamed source is that splitting the two films is artistic rather than financial reasons. The article also states that Warner Bros. is rumored to be thinking of Steven Spielberg as director of the last movie.
UPDATE: Empire Online reports
that the WB has let them know that "no decision has been made about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and that Steve Kloves will be returning for the last picture but that no script has been started due to the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike.

I really don't like the idea of splitting the movie in half. Whats the problem with just making it longer than the other ones. I agree with power granger I would not want to see Speilberg direct this film I don't want them to turn into a horror film.

Yay! I don't really approve of the last film being cut in 2 - so I'm grateful to the last update... And I don't really like Spielberg for Harry Potter, so...

Brilliant to have Spielberg to direct the Deathly Hallows...But, he's the kind of Director to make movies real scary or mysterious.

It would be nice but I seriously doubt it will be two films since OoTP was the biggest book and that was not made into two films..even though it probably should have..very choppy and left out too much. :(

I would really prefer that they just make the last film one long film. People will sit through a long movie if they really want to see it.
As for Spielberg directing the last film...no thanks. I think he is a great director; just not for Harry Potter.
I do have one quesiton though; there was mention that the writers strike may affect the writing of the last script. If no American casting/directors/etc, then why is this strike going to affect a British made movie. Thanks for your help, and feel free to stamp a DUH! on my forehead if the answer is obvious :o)

Like A FEW others here
i disagree i would not want there to be 2 separate movies.
Were already seeing the movies in pieces
why wud we want to split a movie that could be crammed into one film?
i dunno seems pointless
They should just have one whole movie.
Also i think if Speilberg directed the movie he would make it so much better hes amazing and has made such great movies!

I hope it's true. I've always wanted to see what a Spielberg or a Peter Jackson could do with those movies.

I highly doubt that.
And if they haven't made any of the previous movies into two, I doubt it will be any different for DH.

Oh, I would love Spielberg to direct HP movies since everything I saw from him is amazing or even my fave (Schindler's List, Poltergeist...)! I dunno, though, what to think about two movies... Maybe one long would be better idea... :S

I doubt Spielberg is going to direct DH and that it is going to be 2 films. I think it would be cool if he directed but I'm sure whoever directs will do a brilliant job anyway. I hope it's not 2 films though.

WHOA!!! SPIELBERG!!! That would be awesome. ;)
Anyway, I wouldn't mind if Deathly Hallows will be split in two... but then it would be better if they just made it an extremely long one? I think so. The Potterheads wouldn't mind spending a quarter of a day in the cinemas, I'm sure. And, undoubtedly, we're willing to watch it a second and third time. That's how much we love it all. :)
Overall, what matters most, though, is that they portray this final movie well. The book ended beautifully, thus, so should the movie.
