Rumor alert: 'Deathly Hallows' to be 2 films, Spielberg to direct? Popular (8041)

JANUARY 14, 2008 at 8:02 AM

Source: Daily Mail

UPDATE: Some of this has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros.

This past weekend a storyopens in new window hit the web stating that the last film in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be shot as two films. While this story originally appeared in a British newspaper it has spread like wildfire around the internet. You may remember that a similar rumor appeared online while filming of Order of the Phoenix was taking place.

According to the article the reason given by an unnamed source is that splitting the two films is artistic rather than financial reasons. The article also states that Warner Bros. is rumored to be thinking of Steven Spielberg as director of the last movie.

UPDATE: Empire Online reportsopens in new window that the WB has let them know that "no decision has been made about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and that Steve Kloves will be returning for the last picture but that no script has been started due to the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike.

Ugh! I can't believe the strike is affecting the writing of the script! It would be so amazing if Speilberg directed the final movie. I think he would be able to capture the mood of the book very well. I really don't want that other guy to direct DH because from what I have read about him, he wants to create a more artistic adaptation of the book, which scares me because of how PoA turned out thanks to his buddy Curaon. I really want the final movie to be portrayed well because I want the movies to end as beautifully as the books did.

I would rather have a three hour long movie than have it split into two. As for Spielberg I don't think he's right for it.

It would be nice if they were two movies because too much is crammed into one movie and they leave out alot of important points that make the movie pretty corny and confusing for someone that has not read the book.

I believe that the whole Spielberg stuff is 100% untrue. And it would be AWFUL if the last book was split in TWO. If they want to get in all the information, then they should do a LONG movie, not split it in two.

I would actually like to see it released in 2 parts. I think it would be fitting. The first one could focus more on the search for the horcruxes while the last one could focus on the hallows and final battle. Also, the book has too much information to squeeze into one film. Yes, OotP was longer and made a good film, but in years 1-6 they could cut out a majority of classroom scenes and school related stuff and just concentrate on the main story. Since the last book is about 90% main story there's just not that much you could edit out.

For a director, I'd love to see Alfonso Cauron return. I think he did a great job with Prisoner of Azkaban. His camera techniques, attention to background detail, and view of the world would be great for Deathly Hallows. I also agree with Nymphadora_Banshee that Tim Burton would be great, too.

That would be awesome! Thought it doesn't sound very likely. It wouldn't be too cool though if we had to wait extra long for it.

I am not sure how I would feel if Steven Seilberg was going to direct DH. As long as he is true to the book I think it will be fine but I really liked Yates for Phoenix and he is doing HBP I don't think it will be to change directors again for the last movie the big eng of the series. A two part may be a good ideal to fit everything in and not cut a lot out, but they said they did not even write the script yet so I don't how they can say that yet.

I think it should be two movies, and have thought so since reading it this summer. But as we all know, it won't be - it will be not enough info crammed into one movie. As usual.

I think Spielberg would make it interesting. I'm not so sure about spliting it into two films, but they would have to cut a lot for it to fit into one, so maybe two would be better. We'll just have to wait & see what the official word form WB is.

I doubt it, didn't Speilberg get turned down for the first one because he wanted to Americanize it?

I'm really sick of those greedy writers, they need to get over themselves.

plus with 2 movies you can get more in and not have to squeeze it all in for one movie.

NO NO NO! I absolutely refuse that Spielberg should be the director for Deathly Hallows. That man can be celebrated as much as he possibly can, but HE IS NOT fit for the Potter films. Nor, in my opinion, is he that good of a director. His films are not that good, and could even be considered a bit boring too.

If you don't believe me, take a look at "War of the Worlds". He gave such a crappy ending to the story, not to mention that the story itself was purely ridiculous.

Maybe we should get in strike as well. Get some markers and posters out: WE WANT YATES! WE WANT YATES! haha.

I'm Split on this decision (pun intended) he he.

But seriously, if they did do this, I would prefer that they fill the movies at the same time, and release them close to each other. (1 in July 2 in November)

But The idea of Speilburg directing it? He's a fantastic director, but you know. He's the one that wanted to make Harry Potter an animated movie with some american kid voicing Harry. I'm split (yes the same pun)!

Yes! Im glad they brought the idea of splitting DH into two.. I really want this to happen! It would be such a good ending to HP because nearly all of DH is important and can't be cut. It would make it easier for the director too, and it'll be like an 8th movie for us! I personally think, if the right director came along and did split it, DH would just be AMAZING. And we do need a good finish to the HP series, so they better not mess it up by giving it to some crappy director. It HAS to be perfect.

It's not true. Steven Spielberg would not do a film like this it is not in his league. I just don't see it happening. Del Torro should do it. It is dark enough for him to direct it and I can totally see him direct it. The movies of Harry Potter have so far been disappointing for me so I would like someone new to try there hand at it.

Well, if it would be done to absolute perfection, then I would definitely be willing to see it done in two. As for Spielberg directing, I guess there really aren't any specific directors I'm vouching for. Again, as long as it's done well and true to the book I'll be satisfied.
