UPDATE: Some of this has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros.
This past weekend a story
hit the web stating that the last film in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be shot as two films. While this story originally appeared in a British newspaper it has spread like wildfire around the internet. You may remember that a similar rumor appeared online while filming of Order of the Phoenix was taking place.
According to the article the reason given by an unnamed source is that splitting the two films is artistic rather than financial reasons. The article also states that Warner Bros. is rumored to be thinking of Steven Spielberg as director of the last movie.
UPDATE: Empire Online reports
that the WB has let them know that "no decision has been made about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and that Steve Kloves will be returning for the last picture but that no script has been started due to the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike.

Two films??? Hmm, i don't know what to think. I don't really like that. i would feel like they were cuting it and making a whole new story...knowing how movies work and all. I don't know...I guess we will have to wait and see.

As for the Spielberg thing, I really don't have an opinion for or against. Those rumors have been around forever, so I take them with a grain of salt.
As for the split movie, I think it's an awesome idea. The fact that WB didn't come out and say "there's no truth to this story" seems to me that it's been discussed and although I wouldn't hold my breathe, I also wouldn't count it out completely!

I don't think I like the idea of "Deathly Hallows" being made into two movies...then we'd have to wait for the second half after the first part came out. Just make one big movie...if people sat down for 3 1/2 hours to watch "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," then they'll do it for "Deathly Hallows."

I remember a rumour like this about GoF. I don't think I'd like DH to be made into two films - 7 is the number it should be. Besides, it'd make it into something like one of those stupid TV episodes that says "...to be continued" at the end and at the start of the next episode, they say "previously on..."
Heh, I'm blathering. But no, I don't like the idea and hopefully the rumour'll be dismissed by WB.

Spielberg? uh...yeah...right....and I'm the Queen of Fairyland! I highly doubt he would direct the film. And well, I'm not sure I would even enjoy it if he did direct the film. I rather like those who have been directing the previous films. Why change direction now? My thought is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

I doubt they'll make two films for Deathly Hallows if the Writers Strike isn't resolved soon. They actors will be too old! Hehe.
I'd like to see another British director do the final film(s?) perhaps a return to Cuaron? I really liked his interpretation.

ehhh maybe it would be cool... i think it would just be annoying actually because we would all wait for both movies and expect barely anything to be left out because they had 5 hours of fliming time but then there is still going to be ALOT left out and id rather it all be in one movie and not have to wait for two

I do not know how I feel about this at this time. It might be cool to do a 2part film, but I would prefer one longer movie instead. As for Steven Spielberg directing, he is great and all, but I do not think he should be allowed to direct this film. Either way, I will wait to see what the WB has to say.

I really hope that the WGA doesn't postpone the last movie! That would just be horrible. They really do need to get it started...

Hmm... as grand as that sounds, I don't think I'd like having Deathly Hallows split up into two movies. Wouldn't that somewhat ruin the story? They would have to find a good ending in the middle of the book, but there is only one arc... as oppossed to two -- You know what I mean?

Hmm. I don't know how I feel about that. It would definitely be cool to have Steven Spielberg directing, but DH split into two films? I guess it does mean that almost everything from the book can get into the movie(s)... and I definitely like having Steve Kloves back.

Oh i head this from Mugglenet.com yesterday..im getting really exited..so exited i think i was working so slow today..it would be really cool if they do it 2 movies..like they did with Peal Harbor..i think...one thing what is wrong with not letting Speilber do it..what did he want to do with the 1st one..im a bit lost so someone do tell me..please..
[b]PowerGranger[b] Steve Kloves is american but i think that since he get pay alot for doing the HP movies..that he wont be on strike..that for shure..and he is in the UK so i dont thnink that is affecting him..

I really hope they make DH into two parts. Unlike the other books, there really isn't anything you can cut out without confusing people, especially those who haven't read the books. I myself was confused at some parts. o___O
But I think it would be fine in two parts, as long as they don't wait too long to release the second half after the first one. That would be awful.
And I'd actually like Jackson to direct this, but he already has a few movies he's directing, so it's impossible. Not sure about Spielberg, but he wouldn't be bad.
As long as they don't bring Alfonso back! He's the worst of the lot in my opinion.

Harry Potter fans are set to get a double treat in the film of the final story – and movie makers are set to double their money.
Crew working on the sixth Potter film, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, have been told J.K. Rowling's seventh novel, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, will be released in two halves.
For film-makers Warner Bros, whose first five Potter films have made £2.5billion in box office receipts – more than any other movie series – it could mean a £500million bonus in ticket sales.
But sources insist the reason behind the two-movie plan is artistic rather than financial.
The books got progressively longer – the first, the Philosopher's Stone, had 223 pages while Deathly Hallows has 776 – and fans have complained chunks of later novels have been left out of films.
A film source said: "There's so much to fit that the view is the last movie should be in two halves. There is a huge battle when Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, takes on Voldemort that needs to be done really well."
And Ms Rowling points out on her website: "It is simply impossible to incorporate every storyline into a film under four hours long."
At Warner Bros, who are rumoured to be thinking of Oscars and a big-name director such as Steven Spielberg for the final film, a spokesman said:
"People are discussing all possibilities."

That's stupid! I mean if the lord of the rings could make three-four hour films then why not the potter films? I'm not gonna sit there watch the first part of the movie and then wait for part two. And as far as Spieldberg doing the last film I don't like that idea because Spieldberg does family sci-fi and he'd probably make it way to kid like.

I think they should just stick to 1 movie then after its all over and its quieted down a bit WB should get new actors and do a mini-series on each book because that way they could fit so much more detail into it then was in the movies.

Ahhh! I'll be so happy if they split it into two! It'd be awesome to watch the movie twice and 2hrs + 2 hrs = 4 hours! :D And just imagine all the suspense. The audience will be so eager to find out what happen next the'll bomb the second movie and poof! Highest grossing film ever made! :)

I would prefer it if it were just one big movie. They should do justice to the last film at least, my making it longer so that all of the parts are in it. Return of the King was long and still did well, there's no need for it to be 2 hours something...
