UPDATE: Some of this has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros.
This past weekend a story
hit the web stating that the last film in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be shot as two films. While this story originally appeared in a British newspaper it has spread like wildfire around the internet. You may remember that a similar rumor appeared online while filming of Order of the Phoenix was taking place.
According to the article the reason given by an unnamed source is that splitting the two films is artistic rather than financial reasons. The article also states that Warner Bros. is rumored to be thinking of Steven Spielberg as director of the last movie.
UPDATE: Empire Online reports
that the WB has let them know that "no decision has been made about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and that Steve Kloves will be returning for the last picture but that no script has been started due to the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike.

If only the rumor was true.
As for the Writer's strike....
I totally forgot about that! I didn't even think that the Harry Potter movies would be postponed due to this event.
Now I go to my worrying....

Argh, bloody Kloves again.. I thought WB would think OotP ran beautifully without him.. Oh well, back to Hermione calling Ron 'Ronald' *shudders*
Honestly though, I don't like in the UK and even I know that this 'news' is almost guaranteed B.S. And Spielberg? Eurgh, no, he would just try to make DH his 'own', and that is the one movie I DON'T want any sort of artistic adaptation in it - it must be straight from the book!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA whats the likelyhood of that happening? From a huge fan of the books and being a really disapointed fan of most of the films, basically due to not staying to j.k rowling's story, for DH to be cut into two movies would really really really really really reall make the movie/s bad! i mean what would the conflict and climax be in the first movie?
personally i have nooooo idea.

Wow. It would not be cool if the book was split into two movies. And it would be interesting to see Spielberg directing the last movie. I'm very glad to hear that Kolves in back and hopefully he succeeds in transforming the book into a movie like he did last time.
I can't wait for more news to come up so we will know for sure.

Why can't they just make one long movie? Or not even long, but a decent length, at least. A split movie just seems a little silly to me. DH isn't two books, so I don't think there should be two movies...
As far as the Spielberg goes, I wouldn't like to see him directing DH at all, but ever since PoA, I've given up on expecting the movies to stick to the book and not be so much about the director's "unique artistic vision", so I wouldn't really care if he ended up directing DH. The movies are already all over the place. That being said, I really don't think the rumor's true. Please, just don't bring back Cuaron! Personally, I would love to see Columbus or Newell back. I think they stuck the closest to the books, and didn't try to make the movies all artsy, or whatever you want to call it.

I highly doubt that they would split Deathly Hallows into two films. I don't think Steven Spielberg would be a good choice for the final film. I just don't think he would do it justice.

As many people have already pointed out, this kind of rumor has come up before. They won't make it into 2 movies, there's no doubt in my mind. Think about it: They will want to keep continuity between the existing movies...anything that they cut out before that pops up in 7, GONE. I haven't really done the math, but I have a feeling that this will cut down the material a LOT, so there wouldn't even be a need for 2 movies. They will simplify the plot too. Depending on what they do to 6, it will be them hunting, with those scenes simplified and made easier, then the battle at the end, fade to black then the epilogue last. I do agree with a lot of others here that a longer film, along the lines of LOTR - Return of the King, would be fantastic. I mean, what a way to go out, a longer, epic battle film...amazing.
No to Spielberg...make that a hell no. I need to see 6 before being convinced Yates should do 7. I loved what Cuaron did. He was the first to deviate, and the first to darken the films. Del Torro would be my choice, after seeing his previous work.

I think that to split it into 2 movies would be cool, as long as there wasent a whole year or a long gap between their releases, that would just be annoying.
I would hope whoever the director will be, spielberg or not, will see that this movie is very important and wouldnt worry about how long it will end up being, i wouldnt have a problem watching a 3 hour long deathly hallows, i wouldnt mind watching 2 seperate films either, i just hope they put what needs to be in it without worrying about how long it will end up being.

RON's all up in heRmiONe says:
I am sort of on mixed feelings on the split. It doesn't matter if the book isn't longer than OotP, its the information and the plot of the book that matters. I woud love it if they split the movie into 2 parts because there is too much information given and too many scenes in the book that were important, they can't cut it all out. Plus, it would make a longer movie. The reason why I'm against it(because of what I've been reading on the comments here, so credit goes to those who wrote this stuff), is because they would have to find a spot to split the movie(very hard), would there be 1 or 2 release dates?...and I personally wanna sit through a movie nice and quiet, if the movie has to be on 2 disks, I'd hate to have the movie stop in the middle, get up, change the disk and sit down and watch the rest of the movie. Whatever WB does, I'm fine with it. But what i've been saying for the past year, I don't care what happens as long as they put the correct information in the right spots in the movie, they capture the feelings and emotions emitted from the book...I just wanna get a feeling of "its done, my head can rest in peace, they did justice to the series and the book".
About Spielberg directing...NO. No offense to the guy, he has amazing movies, but what he wanted to do with the first movie stuck with me. He wanted to make Harry Potter Haley Joel Osment! He wanted to use an american cast, I don't know, but I have a feeling that if he's chosen to direct it, it'll be totally different from what we're used to and it won't be good. Maybe it will...I'm still rooting for that Del Toro guy to direct it(the one who directed that Pans Labrynth movie).

hermionefan1, it hasn't been comnfirmed, that's the article this is referring too, the rumour one. It's from the Daily Mail, it's very unlikely to be factual.
Two movies is a stupid idea. It's a series of 7 books, so it would be 7 films. Can you imagine, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Tacky cheesey and horrible! And as I said before, where would they split it? There's no obvious place and it would just be horrible.

Silly Dragon says:
Spielberg, why not? I think he could do a fine job on Deathly Hallows, and it would mean John Williams scoring the original soundtrack. However I'm not too happy about the idea of splitting it into two spearate instalments, but perhaps a cut could be relevant all the same if it is carefully decided. Still, I'd much rather have one long movie, since no such break appears clearly in the novel.

I don't think this is a good idea to shot Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as two films. Other Harry Potter books were also shot in one film and some of these books are thicker than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. So, why 2 films in the end?

Since a similar rumor appeared about the OotP movie, I have a feeling the movie will be kept as one. I'm not sure if I'd want DH to be split in two. There were many details in the book that might be tough to leave out and adapt otherwise. But would the two movies still be any good? Half the story would obviously be missing, so the movies might feel incomplete. But I have liked Stephen Kloves' adaptations, maybe he could pull it off. Not sure about Steven Speilberg directing. I mean he is a good director, but I think I prefer some of the other possible directors.

Keep dreaming ... I think that two films is what the fans want. The studio will keep churning out the highly-abridged versions.
And here's a thought - replace Steve Kloves!! I think it's about time a newer, fresher perspective is brought into the movies.

That strike is taking a toll to everyone/everything. It has canceled quite a lot of TV shows, but we really can't blame them. They deserve their right to do this and I'm actually glad for them.
Besides, that strike will help keep the Harry Potter survive for a longer time. xP
But it really would be cool if there were 2 films.. hmm..
That would be fun. xP

Go figure WB ! Fans of the books have been asking for longer movies ever since GOF. Now they're saying they want to do DH justice by making it into two seperate films ?
DH wasn't even the longest book of the series. I'm not interested in seeing one movie, then waiting X months to see the end. One three hour movie would be enough.
