Some news around the web today indicates that director Guillermo Del Toro, who has previously indicated
that he would be interested in directing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is in talks to direct The Hobbit and when producer David Heyman was asked to comment
on this he stated "that Del Toro was sadly not really in the running because he's rather busy."
There doesn't seem to be enough days in the year for Del Toro to tackle both the The Hobbit, with an expected release during 2010, and the last Harry Potter film also slated for a 2010 release.

Too bad for Del Toro, who's probably cursing his luck right now. Anybody but Spielberg at this point?

Thats too bad. i can't wait to see though if he would direct The Hobbit. And I realy hope that Alfonso Curon would be back to direct the last film, I just love how he made the 3rd one. And David Yates is not that bad either. I would be glad to have one of those two to direct the last film.

"The Orphanage" and "Pan's Labyrinth" are two of Del Toro's works. They're really great!
It's too bad he won't get to direct the last one. I would stick with Yates if possible. Meanwhile, I want Spielberg to be as far away as possible from the Potter films. The only movie I really did like him directing was The Terminal, but I'm not sure he could be good with Potter.

AHHH! That's really Dumb! I really love his work, it's so sneaky and wicked! I loved Pan's Labyrinth It's not a jump out of your seats scary but by the end of it your really freaked out! I hope they find someone just as good to direct DH.

Whoa, yeah, it would be impossible to do both The Hobbit and DH justice for release in the same year. I must admit I let myself get a little excited about Del Toro when I should know not to listen to rumors. We can certainly consider this confirmation that he's not doing DH, since the info is coming from David Heyman. Darn.

I really want to know who will directing the final film. But it's ok that it won't be him, he just seems too busy! I can't wait until the release of "The Hobbit" but that and "DH" will be a while.

Wellll... I know he said he wouldn't do one... but... Terry Gilliam is unexpectedly free again... [/black humour] :-P Since it looks like we won't get The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus with its star dead, having Gilliam at the helm of Deathly Hallows would be awfully nice... We can dream, right?

Imagine having both of those massive films to do. Personally, I wouldn't want him to push to hard - both films need lots of time, and tender loving care!

Well I was not a fan of Pan’s Labyrinth, the style was good but I hated the story and all of the graphic violence.
I am very interested in seeing the Hobbit but I hope he does not try to make it graphic.

I wasn't too thrilled when I found out that he may direct DH because he has been compared to and associated with Cuaron, and I really hated what he did with PoA. I hope whoever it is will do the final book justice and not make it cheesy.

@Tikihaha:
Peter Jackson won't be directing The Hobbit because he and the studio (New Line) had a falling out over money. But he'll still be executive producer, if I recall correctly, and thus, still has tremendous influence.
