The South Bank Awards
took place at the Dorchester Hotel in London today with Lord Richard Attenborough presenting
author J.K. Rowling an award for outstanding achievement in the arts in recognition of the Harry Potter series.
In an backstage interview
from the event Rowling states that finishing the series was "more painful than getting divorced" and that she has finished writing about Harry:
It has been the worst break-up of my life - far worse than splitting up with any man.
But it has also been wonderful to stop and draw breath and think, 'My God, look what's happened with an idea I had 17 years ago on a train.'
I think I've definitely finished his story. I said seven books and there have been seven.

Great pictures! We're proud of you, Jo!! Way to go!!
But it has also been wonderful to stop and draw breath and think, 'My God, look what's happened with an idea I had 17 years ago on a train.'
And we thank God, that the tiny idea flitted across your brain then!

You know it's pretty bad when it's compared to divorce!
Seriously though, I haven't looked back since I finished Harry last December. Too busy. But it's nice to know she's not succumbing to the demands for an eighth book-at least not yet.

Just how many awards has JK won? I must be an astronomical number. I can't even imagine how she must feel about ending her journey with Harry. Considering that she can't even have any time to think of other things because everytime she's in public she's asked about him.

I think it's great that she managed to tell the whole story in seven books. I can only imagine how many story details and characters she had to cut for "the greater good". I can definitely learn a lot from her when it comes to that. I once said one of my stories would be 50 chapters long at most, and I ended up needing 88 (long) chapters to tell it all ;)
I'm curious to see what kind of book she is writing now and if that really will be a detective novel...

I'm happy to hear she won that award (who else deserves it, after all :P). I imagine writing the end of the series must have been pretty difficult, after being focused on it for all those years. Good interview too!

Well she totally deserves the award of course, but i'm a little sad. As a fan, i feel like there's so much more to harry's story - and his world - that i want to know. But i understand what she's saying, and respect that as the author, she has the right to decide when his story ends.

Congrats Jo!
I just love her.
I understand the pain that she felt since I felt the same way when I finished reading DH.
I still have hopes that she might write at least one more HP book, but that might be a long time from now.
However, I heard that she is writing a political fairytale so I am greatly looking forward to that.
