The Los Angeles Times just broke the long-rumored news
that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will be split into two films, directed by David Yates from a script by Steve Kloves.
The report cites producer David Heyman and says the official announcement will be made tomorrow by Warner Bros. The films, simply titled "Part One" and "Part Two," will be released in November 2010 and May 2011 respectively.
Earlier today, SnitchSeeker posted an account
from a fan who said actor Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) confirmed this news at Collectormania.
[Note: While visiting the set of 'Half-Blood Prince' in January, this editor had a strong feeling these decisions had already been made, although reps and stars alike were quite coy during interviews. You may remember HPANA posted these unconfirmed suspicions but was asked by Warner Bros. to remove the article.]

I do smell a bit of greed here, but I think if JKR thought this was a move fueled primarily by cash, she would not have allowed it and I do think she wields this sort of power and could indeed veto it if she wished. Since the first rumors came out, I have worked out a sort of logical way to split DH into two, but it's not ideal to me either. I'm excited that, presumably, everything will make it into the films, but I'm just not sure how I feel about the split. I'm kind of happy about David Yates though. I was getting sort of scared of the thought of someone totally new to the Potterverse taking on DH.
How is this going to work with all the actors, I wonder? Weren't they all signed through 7, not 8? Or maybe they signed through 8 and we just didn't know it at the time?
I must digest this a bit!

Very cool, but now we have to wait a little longer to see it all done. It's all good though.

this is really great news. This way they don't have to leave any of the important stuff out. I hope they do a good job of it.

Yes, yes, yes! There is no way they could've fitted everything into one movie. They will still have some tweaking to do, because of all the stuff that's been left out so far, but this is great news!
Pity they didn't do it with HBP, all those scenes in the Pensieve, I suspect we'll be severely short changed on them.

And it will string it out for a few more months too (even though I haven't enjoyed the last two movies, I continue to live in hope....).

It's too bad that they've waited only until the last film to take the two part approach. It could have easily been done from the fourth film onward. I'll be curious to hear more from David Heyman about the rationale for splitting the final film up. My initial reaction is that it has to be about increasing profits and not to uphold the story and plot. I could be wrong and hope that I am.

Ok, I've not posted in a long time, but this story just begs for my opinion! I guess I'm one of the few who think that this is a bad idea. I've read the book a few times and listened to the audiobook more times then I can count and I just don't see how they are going to have enough material for two movies. In fact, the 7th book is the one out the four longest books that I felt could best be told in one movie! There is entirely too much "hurry up and wait" in this book. Unless they are planning on adding in quite a lot of "fluff" to the movies, then one of the two movies (probably the first) will be rather boring.

Ahhhh! Yeah, this is the most exciting news concerning Harry Potter in a while. I don't want to wait, but at least by separating it into two parts they won't have to take that much out.
And I'm sure David Yates will make it an awesome movie.
Gah, I'm so happy now!

I do like the fact that it will be split into two films. I like the idea that more scenes will be added! However, it is so bad that we will all experience a Harry Potter cliff- hanger in a movie! This part is a terrible idea.

I think that is a great idea. When reading the book I always thought it would be hard to put all of the information in the movie that is needed. I am glad they are doing this.

Wow, I'm surprised. I think this will be good as long as they choose the splitting point very carefully. I'm happy that they saw there wasn't much material to be cut, because I agree.

Blah! That stinks. All these other films they cut out whatever they felt like, and now they are going to make the last one longer? Nice time to make that decision. I think the idea stinks.

I am very disappointed with this move! I have a very uneasy feeling that they are just trying to milk it for every dime they can get out of it. I hope not, but there it is.
I don't understand the justification.
GOF, OOTP, and HBP were kept to one film and if that was possible, then it is so for DH as well. I have now reread it probably 25 times and I can see lots of "editable" moments. Hasn't it already been confirmed that ther is no Bill and Fleur in HBP? Are they going to suddenly appear in the film of DH?
I hope they don't add a lot to the book, either. That is another concern I have. I just wish they would have kept it to one film. If Jo could complete the series in seven books, I really don't think we need eight movies.

Oh, and one more thing...
Hasn't Warner Brothers ever heard of something called an EXTENDED EDITON?
Why don't they release on film and then release and extended DVD?
It seemed to work for this little film franchise I've heard of called LORD OF THE RINGS!

Are all the actors still obligated to be in the "Part II," cause there contracts may have only been for two more films (meaning HBP and Hallows(1))?

I think it's a good idea to split the movie into two parts. That way, they can include so much more from the book. I wish they'd done this with GoF, OotP, and HBP as well, though.
The only thing I don't agree with is putting the two parts in theaters six months apart. They'd probably have to leave off with a cliffhanger for the first part, and it would be torture waiting to find out what happens, at least for those who haven't read the book. And then by the time the second part is released, you've forgotten the details of what happened in the first part...
It would be cool if they released the first half on DVD a week or so before the second half was released in theaters. That way, you could refresh your memory of the first part of the movie before seeing the second part.

I agree with Mrs. Nymphadora Lupin I am NOT a David Yates fan at all. Mike Neville and Cuaron did the best of the directors. I also don't like Steven Kloves, though in his defense (oh my gosh am I saying that?) Order of the Phoenix was done very confusingly, I was pretty disappointed. OotP REALLY needed to be a LOT longer.
Aside from that 2 movies woohoo! Hopefully they are two ultra-long movies! Also, Bring Biggie back!

But I would have preferred it to me longer rather than split.
And they come out too far apart :(

Does anyone realise how depressing and incomplete that first movie will be!?
If they can make book 5 into 1 film, they sure as hell can do it to book 7! >=[[[[
