Warner Bros. officially announced
this morning that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie will be released in two parts and will be directed by David Yates.
In making the announcement, Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov stated:
It has been an honor for our studio to be entrusted with bringing J.K. Rowling’s extraordinary book series to the screen, and we have always felt a great responsibility to be true to her vision. In concluding the film franchise, we recognized that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is packed with vital plot points that complete the story arcs of all of its beloved characters. That said, we feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and release the film in two parts. We could not imagine the final chapter of the film franchise being in better hands than those of David Yates.
Part one of the movie will open in November 2010, with part two to be released in quick succession during the summer of 2011.
UPDATE: Screenwriter Steve Kloves adds
that the split in the final movie is being done for all the right reasons:
Years ago, we briefly - and seriously - considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited - almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I’d finished - that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn’t take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I’m sure some will think we’re crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I’m really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo - in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans - for their loyalty all these years - to give them the best and most complete experience possible. I’d love to do it in three parts!

I'm excited for this possibility; I hope it works. The cynical part of me thinks its a ploy to get twice as much money out of the final book. However, the fan part of me is psyched and hopes this means the storyline will be better portrayed then in previous movies. Plus, I think Yates did a great job with the fifth movie, so Im happy that he is directing.

I'm sure it'd have been a lot better (if not practical) to get the fans, the real harry Potter fans to direct this last film. Is there even any one FAN who believes it's better to make DH into to films?
Seven is so much more of a magical number than 8. Come on, 8 doesn't have that ring to it or anything. So what if DH is packed with flavour? So were the other amazing books which you film people cut down so horribly.

I think that's awesome! There is definitely enough to make two movies despite what some are saying. They might have been sitting in a tent a lot but them even doing that had significance to the story because other things went on during that time. I'm all for it since OOTP got gypped of most it's story.

TWO films?! Splitting that seventh year in two parts?! ... Oh, whatever...
At least maybe they won't cut so many things from the book...
Whatever.

Wow, that's pretty nuts...
But I'll go with it, because I too hate having parts cut out of the movies. If this is what they feel they've gotta do, then they gotta do it. I'll pay for another movie ticket (or rather two tickets because I always see it more than once) and I'll wait patiently for six months (because they want to make the movie AWESOME, so that's why we have to wait, in case SOME of you didn't know).
For the rest of you, if you can't wait six months without complaining, shut it and re-read "Deathly Hallows." Maybe you'll discover something you missed the first time around...

Thats totally awesome, but it will also be horrible, to have to wait a year inbetween the movies, but at least they wont cut as much out in the last book!

Wow- that is so cool that DH is going to be two movies. Now they won't have to cut so much out like they have had to do with the past movies.
I can't wait to hear more abohut the filming of the two movies. This is so awesome.
Hopefully by making DH two movies, it will be the best one out of the series. It would be disappointing to spend so much time and effort in making the two movies to just have them flop- but I'm rooting for the best.
This is an excellent decision to be made. I wonder how they are going to split the two movies up and what they are going to call both of them- maybe both of them will be DH or maybe not...

First off I am really excited that they are going to do a two movies for the last book. Also for all the complainers think about this. They did this with the lord of the ring books. Also someone on here typed the years between the movie, and they are usually two years apart for some of the movies. Also think about when they have released the movie it is usually in the winter, and summer, so they are just doing it how they would do one movie, and at least it is not two year between the movies. Also the longer we wait the longer HP will be going because once the movie is done there will be no more HP.

I think its probably a good idea about the two movies, as it means they will include much more of the plot detail.
But, Peanut5yoda, LOTR wasn't split into 3 movies - the books are all seperate. Its a trilogy of books, not one book divided into three.

I think that this is a great idea. There is realy no other way to do the book justice. I only hope that the spread between the two parts isn't like ayear or two.the should filme the whole think at once and release them a few months apart.

Squib honey, I'm sorry but you are wrong about LOTR. I was originaly written as one novel. However when Tolkien presented it to his publisher it was sugested because it was too long that he split it into at least three seperate novels.

There are a lot of pros and cons to this, though for me, the Cons outweigh the pros. I don't like the fact that I'm going to have to wait half a year (there is nothing "quick" about that) to see the next movie, or the fact that now we're going to have to wait 2 times longer for the DVD to be released (that's assuming they don't release the DVDs separately, which would be horrible). As much as I dislike this decision, I don't really buy that WB is doing this for money because they could've done this for both GoF and OotP.
The pros are that we (hopefully) won't see them trying to smush everything together and end up ruining the movie(s), it won't be one huge movie, and that, on the sentimental side, HP lasts a little longer.
I guess it's more of the time issue that bothers me most. *frustration*

I'm not too thrilled about it being in theaters at two separate times. I would sit through a 5 hour Harry Potter movie just to watch it haha. It is a good way for Warner Brothers to make money though. We're paying for two movie tickets in the long run.
