Warner Bros. officially announced
this morning that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie will be released in two parts and will be directed by David Yates.
In making the announcement, Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov stated:
It has been an honor for our studio to be entrusted with bringing J.K. Rowling’s extraordinary book series to the screen, and we have always felt a great responsibility to be true to her vision. In concluding the film franchise, we recognized that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is packed with vital plot points that complete the story arcs of all of its beloved characters. That said, we feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and release the film in two parts. We could not imagine the final chapter of the film franchise being in better hands than those of David Yates.
Part one of the movie will open in November 2010, with part two to be released in quick succession during the summer of 2011.
UPDATE: Screenwriter Steve Kloves adds
that the split in the final movie is being done for all the right reasons:
Years ago, we briefly - and seriously - considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited - almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I’d finished - that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn’t take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I’m sure some will think we’re crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I’m really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo - in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans - for their loyalty all these years - to give them the best and most complete experience possible. I’d love to do it in three parts!

*Am I the ONLY person in the ENTIRE world who is going to be really mad at only seeing half a film and then having to wait 6 MONTHS for the next half?! Quick Succession?! Thats over half a year! I can;'t remember a movie I saw last week, let alone 6 months ago!*
Paper Cut: will you calm down. The Lord of the Rings movies didn't exactly stand alone, did they? There were all KINDS of cliffhangers at the end of the first two installments, and they still found a nice way to end those films all the same (and it was a challenge, as Tolkein didn't end the books in a "nice way." When you read those books and you switch from The Two Towers to Return of the King, it's not like reaching the end of an installment and beginning a new one - no, it's more like just turning a page. So in a way, they're only doing the same thing with DH as Peter did with TT and RotK - I'm sure they'll find a way to cut it off nicely and make it smooth).

Hey ButterflyGinevra, I'm sure you'll remember part one of the Harry Potter movie. It "might" be on DVD by the time the second one comes out. I for one have mixed feeling about it.

I understand the cynicism about warners only doing two films to extend there profits from a cash cow....BUT can they really win, we have spent months after all the last films complaining and arguing about what was left out of all the other films, at least they are trying to rectify that proplem and give the franchise the send off it deserves. From a personal point of view i welcome the news and can't wait, at last a chance to see some of the depth the books contain and not just a glossy overview.

Excellent news to hear! I'm wondering now exactly where a good place to split the movie would be. And I'm glad there will only be a six-month span between the two, as opposed the typical year-and-a-half. It will certainly be interesting to see how they both turn out.

Well at least it has been confirmed now. I thought it was going to happen. I'm glad David Yates is directing I think he will do a great job. I don't like the idea of waiting 6 months for part 2 but I am looking forward to the films being much more detailed. So much happened in the last book and I'm glad they won't really be missing much out.

I am very intrigued by this idea, the consumer in me, like many have stated above me is thinking,..just an extra admission a way to get more money out of us harry potter fans, but again the fan in me is really excited to see this in two film and see how they are going to pull this off. to see the movie true to the book. It will be interesting that's for sure.....

Hmm, I think I said this on the deleted post but why for only DH? I was really disappointed by OoTP because so much was cut, why not make two then? I'm sure HBP will be the same. Auriga has it right IMHO

I think that this is a good idea...while I'm SO bummed that we can't see the whole film in one sitting, I love that they are dedicated to making this movie just like the book! I'm glad they are only spacing it our a few months so that we don't have to wait too long!!! :)

Wow 2010! That's a long wait considering HBP is due for release Nov 08. Then that's two years wait for the next installment! Surely that can't be right!
But I'm glad they're taking the time to do the last book justice as I would've hated it if it was rushed, at least now they can tell the complete story.

They still haven't had Bill and Charley Weasley in the movies yet its getting annoying!!>.< And Fleur! They get married grrrr!
The movies always turn out to be good even though they're totally chopped up and good characters are taken out but it still makes me want to throw things at the screen.
You know what's crazy they have a 40 something year old playing James Potter when he died at like 21 I didn't know ghosts were suppose to age!

It's Official, As long as they don't destroy the seperation, I am okay with the split. It would be more intellegent to make it into two long films, I just wish they would come out at the same time so I don't have to wait and wait and wait and... etc for it! =)

I'm glad they're doing this. My boyfriend disagrees as he thinks there's a lot in the book that can be cut, but I loved the last book and would like to see them to ample justice to everything in it. Time-wise, the battle of hogwarts and epilogue could be most of a movie, and none of it should be short-changed.
I think Yates did the best he could within a single movie in OotP, its biggest failing in my opinion was how Harry found out about the prophecy and how minimal his discussion with Dumbledore was. It could potentially be awkward to give us all the developement and backstory we need on characters like Kreacher and Dobby, whom they've paid such minimal attention to, but are crucial in the last book, but hopefully they'll do it seamlessly.
As for all the cynical statements about this being a ploy for more money, if they do a good job with the movies, I don't care, and I can wait for sixth months inbetween movies. As fans this will be sort of our last hurrah, our last big even to look forward to (at least until she does the encyclopedia) and I'm glad they're not skimping on it.

Aaaaaaaaagh! Nooooooo! :( I hate this news, saw a mention of it on the tv earlier but didnt want to believe it. Makes me sick how greedy WB is! I completely agree with Paper cut (hey! *waves*). Why not make the film like they did with LOTR? Loooong but ooh so worth it. LOTR was MUCH bigger then Harry potter and they managed to make decent films out of them without having to make 6 films. They could do a 3 hour film (Pirates of the Caribbean is a prime example of how people still like long films other then LOTR and will sit though it) and then bring out an extended dvd with all the other cut scenes so everyones happy. Ive been dying for that to happen since the start really, disappointing it hasnt.
This reminds me of when they made Northern Lights in to that golden compass film *glowers* Ended it half way through, i was sat in the cinema furious, was expecting more (thought youd see the end of the book for crying out loud, the main bloody point of it) only to be disappointed (not exactly hard with that film to be honest) by them stopping short. Will be the same for Harry potter. Also...2010!? Thats AGES away! Think of how old the actors will be by the time the last films done...or they may just drop out of it (which im sure no one wants).
VERY dissapointed with this outcome. Not every Harry potter fan is a 7 year old with a short attention span.

Not sure how I feel about the two films bit. I'm down with it providing that they come out relatively close to each other because I don't want to wait to see part II of book seven.
