Warner Bros. officially announced
this morning that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie will be released in two parts and will be directed by David Yates.
In making the announcement, Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov stated:
It has been an honor for our studio to be entrusted with bringing J.K. Rowling’s extraordinary book series to the screen, and we have always felt a great responsibility to be true to her vision. In concluding the film franchise, we recognized that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is packed with vital plot points that complete the story arcs of all of its beloved characters. That said, we feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and release the film in two parts. We could not imagine the final chapter of the film franchise being in better hands than those of David Yates.
Part one of the movie will open in November 2010, with part two to be released in quick succession during the summer of 2011.
UPDATE: Screenwriter Steve Kloves adds
that the split in the final movie is being done for all the right reasons:
Years ago, we briefly - and seriously - considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited - almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I’d finished - that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn’t take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I’m sure some will think we’re crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I’m really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo - in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans - for their loyalty all these years - to give them the best and most complete experience possible. I’d love to do it in three parts!

If we don't get to see Charlie and Bill Weasley on screen, I will be very, very annoyed. The only thing that will reconcile me to the idea of two films is having a full-on Weasley wedding.

I agree! It's the only way to fit it all in. However I do hope that when it goes to DVD that they sell it as a 2-pk so as to get a complete feel when you take it home. :) Just my POV.
Toodles!

since when did the film makers decide to include every single detail in the movies?? what are they gonna go back through movies three-six and "fill us in"?? How long do they honestly plan on making the movie as to where they have to split it up??? there is NO reason that a THREE HOUR MOVIE couldn't suffice to do the book justice. personally, i don't want to go back to the movies twice to see one movie- that is extremely stupid. nor do i want to sit at home one day watching the DVD that turns out to be five hours long for one movie; i would lose interest so fast, not to mention i would lose a day. this is an awful idea. the film makers are totally full of it when they say "creative reasons". and its a tragedy Cuaron isn't directing, the third movie is amazing.

All right, I'm all for it! Of course, that's definitely going to be the longest six-month interval ever, but it'll all be worth it to see the final book done right. Excellent decision! Can't wait for it!

Am I the only fan who is floored at the fact that there are people who claim to be Harry Potter fans who are upset over this incredible news?????
This is Harry Potter we are talking about! How WONDERFUL it is that they are making 2 movies out of Deathly Hallows!!! Not only will I happily pay a for a $8 ticket to go see it, I might even buy some popcorn too! :)
And another bonus (for me anyways) is I don't live too far from Orlando, Fl. where they are opening Harry Potter Island at Universal's Island of Adventures, I surely intend to be there as often as possible even if I have to go broke! (kidding really, but you get the point) It's not about the money people, it's about HARRY POTTER and making the FANS happy!! WOO HOO!!!
I just wish Jo would continue writing more books so there could be more movies!
All I can say is CONGRATS to all the Harry Potter fans who can't wait too see these amazing movies and THANK YOU SO MUCH to WB for continuing Harry Potter that much longer. I will be so sad to see it all end.

Paper Cut: will you calm down. The Lord of the Rings movies didn't exactly stand alone, did they?
ButterflyGinevra - nah, I don't really want to calm down. you see, I am incensed by this :)
And the Lord of the Rings was a triology, much like HP is a series of 7 books. Yes, there were 3 Lotr films, but there were 3 Lotr books. Not the same thing. At all. In fact, you're just backing the point that 1 book should = 1 film, for continuity's sake.
Sure, books run into each other like they're one and the same. But JK has written 7 books for seven years. Not 6 books, and then 2 halves of a book and a ploy to make more money.
Not every Harry potter fan is a 7 year old with a short attention span.
Exactemondo. If they're doing this to 'fit in more of the plot' to 'please the fans', they should realise that fans would happily sit through a nice long film.
Therefor,e it is a ploy to make more money out of 7 year olds and their parents, who never have read the books and have no inention of doing so (does it bug you too when people moan about not understanding stuff in the films, even though theyre too lazy to read the books?!)
nomad31406 - also like your points. Since when is one movie made into two movies? Does that even make sense?! One movie can't be 2 movies.
I think if they really feel the need to do this, they should release them a week apart. they'd get exactly ther same number of views, I'm sure of it, and so many fewer angry fans. And people would understand and remember what had happened. 6 months is too long.
Thestral Eyes - Heya! I love you are your excellent points that back up mu rambling nicely :)

silversparkley - yes, yes, it's very lovely that we get HArry for 6 months longer. But wouldn't you rather see ALL of HArry in one nice, continuing film? Rather than a little bit of Harry and then a sudden ending and then a 6 month wait to see what happens?!
And I'm not 'claiming' to be a Harry Potter fan. I've been reading the books for about 11 years. I love the movies, but I don't love waiting. I am impatient, as are many HP fans, as you can see from book and film releases in the past.

That's so awesome. I think they should end the first half with Ron coming back and saying let's do this. I also hope that when the second half comes out some theaters can re-show the first half or put it on DVD early.

Normally I'd be happy that it's 2 films. But seriously, I'm not one to watch half a movie, then wait for the other half. [kind of like with The Matrix, I was glad I saw them on DVD one right after the other]
I'm hoping that the DVD for the first half will be released soon before the second half comes out in theatres so we can have a refresher.
[and the approximate month scares me too because that's when i'm graduating from college and i'm thinking that it'll be released right in the middle of the hubbub around that]

Despite all of the negative comments doing around... I am very happy for this decision. Yes, it seems like they've left out enough plots in the previous movies to shorten the 7th considerably... but if they try hard enough I think they could bring them back and still pull off a good movie.
By the way, I am very excited for David Yates to direct. I think he did a fantastic job with the 5th movie and he will probably succeed again with the 6th.

Are you kidding me...If yall are so fed up and think they're being greedy then maybe they shouldn't split the movies. Then we'll watch a crappy 2 and a half long movie that's not even worth seeing becuase it's absolutely nothing like the book. People think about it. They want quality jsut as much as quantity.

To nomad31406 you're not a obviously true fan of HP if you have read the seven book (which I really doubt it) you will see that there's vital info can't be out and there's no way that all that can be fit in three hours; hey I have an idea you do the script let see how can fit all that in one movie. oh and by the way Cuaron's movie was the worst of the franchise, that was the real tragedy.

I'm so glad that the film makers realize that Jo's literary work should be treated with utmost respect. By creating 2 movies from the last novel, fans won't feel as though they were shortchanged, and many more details from the book will be onscreen.

To Ginny Weasley Potter : Don't be so NAIVE. book seven was an awesome book (except for the last chapter) and do not try to categorize me. why was movie three so lame? you must not be a (and i quote) "true fan of HP" if you can't see that was the best movie to date. the first two are soooo boring. oh my god, its like i have to FORCE myself to watch them drag slwoly through the plot. Movie three no one liked initially because it left out the marauders map backstory. yet, interestingly enough, the fourth and fifth movies (which were good too, but the third was the best) were butchered to meet a two and a half hour time frame and yet no one complained. and now, all of the sudden they suddenly care about "preserv[ing] the integrity of the work" by making it two movies?? furthermore, we don't know how long each half of the movie will be; it could easily fit into one movie and they are just trying to drag it out and make as much money off of it as possible. and i'm arguing this BECAUSE i find it absurd that they are trying to exploit this GREAT PIECE of work. so how is that a harry potter fan for you?
