Warner Bros. officially announced
this morning that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie will be released in two parts and will be directed by David Yates.
In making the announcement, Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov stated:
It has been an honor for our studio to be entrusted with bringing J.K. Rowling’s extraordinary book series to the screen, and we have always felt a great responsibility to be true to her vision. In concluding the film franchise, we recognized that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is packed with vital plot points that complete the story arcs of all of its beloved characters. That said, we feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and release the film in two parts. We could not imagine the final chapter of the film franchise being in better hands than those of David Yates.
Part one of the movie will open in November 2010, with part two to be released in quick succession during the summer of 2011.
UPDATE: Screenwriter Steve Kloves adds
that the split in the final movie is being done for all the right reasons:
Years ago, we briefly - and seriously - considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited - almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I’d finished - that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn’t take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I’m sure some will think we’re crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I’m really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo - in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans - for their loyalty all these years - to give them the best and most complete experience possible. I’d love to do it in three parts!

To Ginny Weasley Potter : Don't be so NAIVE. book seven was an awesome book (except for the last chapter) and do not try to categorize me. why was movie three so lame? you must not be a (and i quote) "true fan of HP" if you can't see that was the best movie to date. the first two are soooo boring. oh my god, its like i have to FORCE myself to watch them drag slwoly through the plot. Movie three no one liked initially because it left out the marauders map backstory. yet, interestingly enough, the fourth and fifth movies (which were good too, but the third was the best) were butchered to meet a two and a half hour time frame and yet no one complained. and now, all of the sudden they suddenly care about "preserv[ing] the integrity of the work" by making it two movies?? furthermore, we don't know how long each half of the movie will be; it could easily fit into one movie and they are just trying to drag it out and make as much money off of it as possible. and i'm arguing this BECAUSE i find it absurd that they are trying to exploit this GREAT PIECE of work. so how is that a harry potter fan for you?

It's a bit cheeky of WB but they are after the money, first and foremost! It's a bit annoying, but still, they did it with Lord of the Rings, it worked well. It is a bit of a money-grabbing ploy, but I for one am quite excited at the prospect of two films - double the excitement! Eek though, I'll be 24 by the time the final instalment comes out - that is a little bit scary!

It would have been absolutely insane to try and cut the book to three hours.

Woo Hoo! Absolutely fabulous! Glad the guys at Warner Bros may do justice to a tremendous author! I'm also glad they're going to release in "quick succession" although 7 months apart isn't that quick.

I'm angry and happy at the same time. I am very very grateful that WB decided to split the films in two to do justice to DH but I'm also very mad because we have to wait so long for the other part to come out.

Of course they had to! But the six month gap between the two films is a bit too much. Although, I must say that the excitement will run very high! I don't mind paying for two tickets as long as they do full justice to the book and the series as a whole.

This is the best news I could have possibly hoped for as far as the final film goes - we'll have so much more enjoyment - and - oh GOSH! I'm just so excited that they won't have to cut so much out :D A part one and two of a single book adaptation does not happen often - I'm so glad it's happening to HP! :D
And if my course works out properly - I may be able to travel to Britain to see the premiere of the final half!

Part one of the movie will open in November 2010, with part two to be released in quick succession during the summer of 2011.
At first I was thinking "Oh that's great, only one or two months wait in between!"
Then I realised you guys have summer differently to us Aussies. BUGGER!
I'm happy with this though.. Usually I would be up in arms about the money aspects, but I seriously don't care if that means DH won't be butchered! (Oh OotP, how could they do this to you?!)

AWESOME! This has to be the best HP news I've heard in a long time. It is going to be such an emotional experience to see this book come to life and I'm thoroughly pleased that Warner Brothers has come to their senses; making at least one HP film into two and giving it the proper treatment. Again, wonderful. Now I have a big reason to be excited for November 2010. Change of subject, is anyone else still amazed that we're writing dates like "2010"? Man, that used to seem so futuristic and far off. Anyway, sorry for the ramble off topic. Very excited to watch both parts of Deathly Hallows. Great, great, great!

This is the best news!! I'm so happy and thank you to WB! ButterflyGinevra I totaly agree with your opinion. People who are real fans won't worry about waiting only 6 months...that's nothing! there's a year and a half between each HP movie anyway so 6 months will fly by.

Ok! I'm not insanely happy with the idea of 2 movies but i'll live. it should be cool. and they should relaease the last one on the day that the 1st book was released in the UK. that would be really symbolic for everyone i think... but that's just what i think. and David Yates you'll be an amazing director as always! Love ya!!!
Happy St. Pat's Day!!

OH MY GOD! This is AWESOME news! Im so happy DH is going to be split. That means less scenes are going to be cut out which means longer movie and HOPEFULLY those HP fans who havn't read the book will actually understand the ending. *sqee!* DH is going to be so awesome!! so many scenes are rushing into my head now which i thought might be cut but they won't be! Who cares if there's a six month gap? at least after watching part 1, we can still expect more to come. Im gonna be in tears when it all ends .. it'll be so sad seeing it end on screen.
Well, Im REALLY glad DH is split into two, but i'm not so sure about David directing them both.. He is great, but OotP lacked alot of good scenes, i really hope he does justice to DH. He can mess up HBP (hopefully he won't!) but DH has GOT to be perfect! He can't afford to mess that up, the ending to the HP series has to be one to remember! ... so no pressure David.. ;)

I think it is an excellent idea, and I was thinking about this ages ago when I first finished reading book 7, I thought "this is a pretty extensive book, they will have a hard time fitting it all into one film"
So I am happy they made this decision, making it into one film would have been a disaster...and they would have cut too much out.

Well I an excited to see the movie split into two movies. I know there is a lot of tent scenes but there are a lot of important scenes that I don't want to see cut. There is plenty to put into two films. Making more money could be part of it but this is the end and I want it to be good. The split in the middle is going to suck but we all waited years between the books so 6 months will not be that long. And it is not like I will be stressing to find out what is going to happen if you read the books you already know everthing. As long as they are true to the books and don't add and unnessary scenes or take something out I will be happy. I really like Phoenix with Yates all the lines from the movie are almost exactly the way there were in the book, with nothing added, it was great, I think Yates will do a great job. I would think there should release the DVD together that will be wrong and proof they are just trying to make money, there is no one that will just buy half the movie.

Guys, i'm pretty sure the first part won't end with TO BE CONTINUED, they are going to split the book in to two FILMS and treat them as such, so it won't be just one long movie split in to two but two seperate films. AKA the first film may keep the title HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS and the eigth film could be called HARRY POTTER AND THE FINAL BATTLE.
And for those of you who are complaing about spending money, yall need to stop being cheap skates and be greatful they are sending the series off in the proper manner or would you rather have DH be a crappy and choppy two hour film? And I don't think you guys realize that after these next 2 films, the HP series is completely done. So be greatful that the movies are sticking around a little bit longer. 2001-2011, sigh, I wanna cry.
