Doctoral candidate and faculty member Colette Drouillard at Florida State University's College of Information in Tallahassee, Florida is collecting data for a research study investigating and seeking to identify reasons why young readers are motivated to read the Harry Potter books.
Because the majority of the current research has been based on why ADULTS think kids read the series, Drouillard's research will begin the process of seeking out what young adults of the present -- actual fans who grew up reading the Harry Potter books -- feel was important in motivating them to read these books.
The study, Growing Up With Harry Potter: What Motivated Youth To Read? consists of two parts.
The first part, to be completed between now and August 31, 2008 can be accessed at the link below. Follow-up interviews will be conducted with several survey participants in order to clarify or expand upon themes found in the responses to the survey.
IF YOU ARE 18-24 YEARS OF AGE and read the Harry Potter books as they were released beginning in 1999,
then click here to take part in the survey
.
(Phase 1 = Online survey data collection: now through August 31, 2008; Phase 2 = Interviews via phone or internet with volunteers selected from those submitting completed Phase 1 surveys: September 2008)
Feel free to email Colette Drouillard at Drouillard@ci.fsu.edu to receive a summary of the results. Also, Colette would love for fans to forward this survey to friends. (HPANA will also be provided a copy of the results when they are published in December.)

Interesting to hear what the final results will be. I think they should cover all ages of adults. But maybe they just want to focus on those that grew up with the books. Maybe it will be broader next time.

Hmm...I'm not old enough. I didn't really read the books untill a couple years ago actually. They were always a little too complex when they first came out and I was never much of a reader. So to pick up a book as big as Harry Potter was always a challenge. But once I did, I learned that reading was amazing.

OK, I feel ancient now. I didn't start reading the books until I was too old to take this survey.
That's a good age range to study, though, as it might give some insight into reading strategies... although I'm sure they'll discover that they're just plain good books. Are good books really that rare, that Harry Potter is singled out as a dominant force in getting children to read?

What an interesting topic but I would be more interested in knowing why so many older adults, like myself, have taken to reading the series.
Thank you in advance, HPANA, for posting the outcome.

Cool, I am 19 and in College now. I think I will look into takeing the survey. I started reading the books because my teachers started reading the books to us in 4th or 5th grade after lunch, and I loved them and soon got all the books on my own.
