Emma Thompson has announced
that she will not return to reprise her role as divination professor Sybill Trelawney for the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movies:
The Harry Potters are great big franchises that are something I’m not emotionally attached to or necessarily particularly creatively attached to. That’s more like doing a turn, whereas the Nanny McPhees are something I’ve written. The art is in those films, they’re very handmade, they’re something that’s very close to me. Those are the ones I really care about.

I kind of find that ungrateful and sort of insulting, towards JK, just because her books and movies have become a HUGE success doesnt make them 'heartless' as her comments suggest, if she doesnt like it then fair enough, but to be that ungrateful about being part of one of the biggest phenomonoms (sorry about spelling) of what i will assume is forever or at least VERY long time, i find that very sad.
hopefully they find someone for the part who isnt so ungrateful or jelous.

Damn, oh, I really wanted that part at the end where she throws her crystal balls onto the death eaters. Such a blow, because they probably won't replace her, and even if they did, I hate it when they change characters (hello, Dumbledore, even though that was involuntary). Shame.

As a fan I absolutely hate any change in the Harry Potter cast, because it somehow detaches the movies from one another. But (hides the inscription on her gun reading: Choose Harry or die!) one of the crucial messages behind Harry Potter is tolerance.
So, guys, what's more important? The surface of the story and the loyality to it - or the message behind? I do not want to be the big moral prat here, I just met this attitude so often it starts to annoy me. We jumped at quite a few throats during the hipe and we - that includes me - weren't always reasonable in doing so.
We criticised actors before we had actually seen them act, just because we believed them to be unfitting in our Harry Potter concept... and so on. You know what I mean.
Well, that's not what I read the books for. I read them for Snape's snide retorts, Dumbledore's wise words and Harry's moral actions - and the normality that somehow combined my real life with their fictional one.
The question is: In our quest to make Harry Potter an absolutely fantastic experience - did we forget the crucial points?
PS: urgh. I absolutely do sound like the moral prat. oh, go on. start flaming me for it now. ^^

She also doesn't have a lot of creative liscense in HP either. or 2. there's Nanny McPhee which is a product of HER creativity.

I am sad Emma is not returning, she was a great Trelawney. I didn't care for Nanny McPhee, I guess I just didn't get it. But if that is what makes her happy she is lucky.

This doesn't necessarily offend me...I love the books but really feel no allegiance to the movies other than the fact that they are based on the books. I think for the most part, the movies have ripped the books apart. Maybe she is just responding to that. I think if fans worshipped these movies, she might have felt different, but nobody can deny that at some point in time all of us have been disappointed by them. The fact that they are part of a "big franchise" has certainly allowed them a lot of room to change things to make them more appealing to the masses...which normally doesn't translate to meaningful emotions and loyalty. Just my opinion.

I understand where she is coming from, she created Nanny Mcphee which was really good, but I do like Harry Potter better. I liked her in the Movies, but they were minor and she is only important because of the Prophecy. Other then that she only plays a minimal role in DH.

But I totally understand her logic. Comparing one massive, nearly entirely US-based enterprise of Harry Potter to her own noble work, it makes sense where her passion is.
I enjoyed her as Trelawney, I thought she did the character much justice. I also love her as Nanny McPhee (I had only seen the movie once, and while it was dull, she was brilliant) and - oh! - she makes me cry every single time I watch Love Actually.

Anyway, her performances were not my favourite out of the various actors and actresses in the films... the emotional attachment wasn't there for me either when it came to her scenes. Trelawney in the movies really did not match up with my perception from the books, so it's not like we're seeing Maggie Smith leave or something.
