Emma Thompson has announced
that she will not return to reprise her role as divination professor Sybill Trelawney for the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movies:
The Harry Potters are great big franchises that are something I’m not emotionally attached to or necessarily particularly creatively attached to. That’s more like doing a turn, whereas the Nanny McPhees are something I’ve written. The art is in those films, they’re very handmade, they’re something that’s very close to me. Those are the ones I really care about.

Although I liked Nanny McPhee very much, and she did a great job making it, she is losing out on a piece of history. Anyone who has had a role in any of the films will be talked and written about for years to come.
I guess she let her head swell a bit too much. Too bad, her loss. I wonder why she accepted the role in the first place, she knew there were more books to be written even then.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

I can totally understand her reasoning. I don't think she's being ungrateful. She was already a highly acclaimed actress before PoA came along .. so it isn't like people started recognizing her because of her role in the HP films.
Anyway I'll miss her as Trelawney. I don't think I can see anyone else playing the part as well as she did.

Good for her. She's an extremely talented actress and should have free will in deciding what her next project will be. What, does WB have people in handcuffs now so they can't decide what work to take on? Threats and bribes to make people star in their films? I'm sure it was a tough decision, feeding the machine, or being independent, but I'm glad she choose what path she felt best for her.
That being said, I will miss thinking of her dropping crystal balls on Death Eaters heads. But, seeing as how not much lately appears to be "true to form," I don't suppose they would have shown that piece anyway.

Your all being quite obnoxious and I believe slightly unobservant of the role that Emma Thompson actually plays in the Harry Potter movies. She plays a minor character, one which only appears in one scene in the entirety of Deathly Hallows. She would not come out and say something like this because of "big-headed"ness or "ungrateful"ness, but rather to announce she won't be appearing in the one scene in a major blockbuster.
She, as an actor and creative individual, would much rather pursue something which she can mould and shape, rather than one which has become comic relief in a franchise which is far from the spirit of the books. Not only do I think she should follow her own path, but she deserves to have that right. Part of being in the film industry is being able to make tough decisions, someone of her caliber must be getting offers for roles constantly - she has to decide which ones will further her creative vision and career. I think she's made a good choice, I'd much prefer to work on a small tight-knit community-esque movie, than a large conveyor-belt of a monster like HP.

I guess some people just don't like the unique attraction of the same actors / actresses appearing across so many films.
(Although, I suspect they didn't offer her the money she wanted for the tiny parts she'd have...)
Would have been good, but could probably get away with just removing Sybill Trelawney entirely from the film.

Ts...did she have to be so rude??
But I cant believe the difference between her looks in real life and as Trelawny! She looks way better without the glasses and all (yes, I know "big surprise").

Aw, that's a shame, I loved her as Trelawney, she's so talented, and she really did make that part. Although I do commend her for speaking out about it and respect her for making the controversial choice to say she didn't feel so attached to HP - of course you'd feel more attached to something you'd written and been really involved in yourself, and people shouldn't be slating that. And anyway, on a more cynical note, she can afford to make choices like that!

I'm kinda happy to see her go as I never liked her Trelawney (not her fault), but I'm unhappy to hear she doesn't like HP, because I really like her and at the same time I love HP (duh). Anyway she shouldn't have been so harsh!

Well....that's too bad.She did a nice job of portraying Prof. Trelawney though. She kinda sounded to me that she's not proud of being part of the HP franchise.I mean, the least she can do is to sound greatful or something, even though she doesn't have a big part in it.Ah....well I still like Prof. Trelawney as a character.

Well good luck to her on those films. Nanny McPhee was sweet and I have always loved Emma, but just because they aren't her work doesn't mean they're not worthwhile. Oh welll. Trelawney is barely in the 7th. They can just edit her out.

I am with mar66. When I first read this, I was thinking it was Emma WATSON. That was a bit of a scare. It is unfortunate that Emma Thompson will not return, but I don't recall Trewlany having a big part in the book. I am actually curious if they are going to bring back Umbridge.

Perhaps I read it wrong, you just never know the tone they take when they are saying these things, but I imagine that for Emma Thompson, HP means perhaps a week of work. Then try to fit that in when you have been greenlighted to film a movie you have written and to star in the same movie, I can't imagine it was a difficult decision to make. Harry Potter (to someone like Emma Thompson) is a bit of a lark, a fun week or so of shooting. It's not like she signed on to a major role, this was just a bit of fun. I love her acting, and I wish her well. It will be sad to see that she's not in the final films, but who knows if they would have given her much to do anyways.

WOW it's fine if she doesn't like harry potter, she could have been a little more respectful. Millions of people, like myself, feel emotionally attached to Harry Potter, and admire it creatively too of course. She was good as Trelawny, a brilliant actress yes, but it's definitely not a huge loss, I don't even remember her much in the 7th. Great, great actors like Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane care about Harry Potter and respect it. Harry Potter is not some robotic, unemotional, huge, money making careless Machine.

I understand there are rules one must abide by when posting quotes from other sources in news items on HPANA. Unfortunately, by just posting the quote from the end of the MTV article, Emma Thompson comes across as an uncaring, rude woman.
If we click on the link and read the article, we discover that she was forced to choose between the two. Given that she is very heavily invested in Nanny McPhee and plays a minor role in Harry Potter, I can see why she made the choice that she did. (We also can easily deduce which people posted comments without reading the whole article first).
If Goblet of Fire could get by without Dobby, Deathly Hallows can get by without Sybil Trelawney.....

Please show this woman a bit more respect. She hasn't been rude, arrogant, jealous or ungrateful. She just said she's more emotionally invested in a project she's written. There's nothing offensive about that. She didn't even say she dislikes HP, just that she cares about Nanny McPhee more. That's not an insult. And she definitely didn't say Nanny McPhee was better than HP, only that her role in it allows her more creativity. We can't blame her for that. Her role in HP is minute and largely irrelevant. And she's an OSCAR WINNING ACTRESS. We should admire her for focusing on roles that better allow her to express her talent. Emma Thomspon shouldn't feel honoured just to be in HP; we should feel honoured Emma Thompson was in HP at all. Many of the other adult actors (like Helena Bonham Carter and Richard Griffiths) have expressed similar sentiments, admitting that they're not in HP for the creative challenge, just the phenomenon.

While I'm with the majority that any change in cast bites, I won't be really torn up over this admission. Although, I would've done a happy dance on the street naked if we could've pushed Gambon off a cliff (or through the Veil) after PoA. *smiles* At least from what I've seen he looks a little more like my mind's Dumbledore this time around, but I digress. I like Emma Thompson in a lot of movies and her Trelawney was really good. Having said that, Nanny McPhee wasn't all that. We own it (I have a 10 year old daughter) but if I'm sitting at home and wanna watch a nanny movie I ALWAYS put in Mary Poppins. Maybe it's my age, but nothing compares to the magic and sugary sweet goodness of Mary. Toodles!
