The first look at Mary GrandPre's new Harry Potter exhibit in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is now online
. The report contains numerous images, and a brief discription of the experience of being at the exhibit.
I spent my time circling the room looking at piece after piece. All but one piece, the chess scene, were pencil sketches. Some were familiar because they were used in the books or prints have been available for purchase, but some where completely new. I laughed a little inside at the "School of Magic" covers, thinking to myself what an awful title that would have been. I loved each drawing as my eyes searched each piece for every little detail.
You can see many of the drawings here
, via Leaky.

The drawings and all are awesome! Mary Grandpre is a great artist and illustator, I love most of her chapter and cover art especially later on in the series. Her DH cover is especially awesome. I like the one with the forest and his parents too, but it gives too much away, though it would be cool if she did it in color and all. As for "School of Magic"-- well it makes me almost grateful for Sorcerer's Stone....

Wow she's really good!
I like her art work, especially the one of Harry dragging Neville up the stairs in OotP in the Department of Mysteries.
Wish I could draw HP like that ..

It took a while but I viewed them all enlarged. They all look so good. I like the use of symetry that is used in all of them. The one that stood our for me is the one with Harry and Voldy in the grave yard with their wands locked together. That is the way Voldemort should look. Very interesting art work.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

She's a good artist, all her sketches are good. The exhibit sounds good. Its just sad I cannot actually see it. I hope they would publish something like a photobook for this.

School of Magic, now that would have been dull... I never even knew this title was considered for the first book. And the later volumes are also about a school of magic, so it wouldn't work anyway.

I've liked many (not all) of her drawings. They're used at the HP Lexicon. The one drawing that I really didn't like was that of Dolores Umbridge. It's more like a very weird caricature.

Fascinating work. It really does bring a certain flavor and feel to the books. They would not have been the same without them. I like her illustrations better than the UK versions.

I honestly liked the Deathly Hallows cover better than the one we got. The Half-Blood Prince one was pretty good to. Oh, and I've known about the old american PS title for awhile now, but School of Magic still makes me vomit.
