News comes today that the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie will be rated
PG in the U.S. "for scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality" by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America).
The MPAA
rates PG as:
A PG-rated motion picture should be investigated by parents before they let their younger children attend. The PG rating indicates, in the view of the Rating Board, that parents may consider some material unsuitable for their children, and parents should make that decision.
The more mature themes in some PG-rated motion pictures may call for parental guidance. There may be some profanity and some depictions of violence or brief nudity. But these elements are not deemed so intense as to require that parents be strongly cautioned beyond the suggestion of parental guidance. There is no drug use content in a PG-rated motion picture.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is scheduled for release on July 17, 2009. This will be the first Potter film since Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004 to be rated less than PG-13.

Okay, good, it seems to me that I'm not the only one that has major worries about this movie... have done since it was pushed back... And now that it's confirmed that it's only getting a PG, well I worry even more... I mean I thought things like the Inferi and Sectumsempra as well as other maturer scenes would of gotten it a PG-13... *sighs* my favourite book and it looks like they're easing off all the scaries for the kiddies... Even my daughter (who's 8) never found Goblet or Order scary so she'll probably think this is a frolic in the park!
I mean give us, the dedicated fans who would normally spend a bucket load of money to see the movies, we who some have grown up reading and loving this series, give us what we'd hope for... don't sugar coat it, and lessen it's glory!!!
*shrugs* too much too hope for though... it's obvious they don't give a flying about us.

It makes you wonder about how much has been cut and edited if it is only getting a PG rating. I don't think any good will come of this and it makes me wonder if the one of the reasons for delaying the film in the first place is because they knew they stuffed it up. Maybe Warner Brothers though but releasing during the Northern Hempishere summer they'd get more money out of it because of more cinema patronage. Still only speculating here.

That makes no sense at all! It should be the other way around, the movies should get more mature as the books do!! But of course WB doesnt feel the need to stick to the books, oh no, they prefer to produce bad, bad movies! GAH!

What the crap?!?
So much for convincing skeptics that this is NOT a kid's series. Obviously, they toned down the first Horcurx hunt. I don't even know if Dumbleore drinks the potion anymore. Heck, they'll problably have a preview from the next Diney/Pixar film or something too, and, with my luck, I'll problably be listening to a whiny eight-year-old as I watch it.

Well, at least a rating means they are thinking of releasing it some time soon...
p.s. the Inferi better be scary. That's a warning.

hehe, you know I can so see my 8 year old whinging that it's not how the books are... being as she's pretty much grew up on Harry!
highly doubt they'll release the movie sooner... It will still be another 7 months... and you'll still ahve to suffer in our dread during that long time... ARGH!!! If only WB weren't being money grabbing so and so's... I mean if they left HBP where it was we could be enjoying it right now!!!

Very surprised... That means they've changed too much as far as I'm concerned.
There are too many scenes I can recall that should at least rate it PG-13 for fantasy violence.
-Kills his uncle
-Kills his Dad and Grandparents
-Horcruxes being created.

I am shocked about the PG rating. I would think PG 13, but my kids will be happier, since I will probably let them see it!

Okay. Unless this proves to be a false rumor sometime really soon, I'm just going to stop coming to these Harry Potter news sites until the actual movie comes out - what's the point? All it does is depress me.
And yes, as PowerGranger said, it is solely because of David Yates' whimpy-ass content. God I hate that man. I really do.

Ugh....that is so annoying. It should really be PG13 like Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix...it is the second darkest book in the series.........

Interesting news, not really good. Seems to me that they can't of done the movie justice if it is rated PG. I think scenes like the bathroom and the cave are meant to be a little scary but it doesn't seem as though there gonna be!

I don't get why people are making a big deal about it being PG. It makes perfect sense. One if you read reports talking about the movie the only scary parts is when Katie got attack, Dumbledore's death, and maybe the attack on the Burrow. They cut the parts that would make it PG-13 like a couple of the memories. So I completly agree with the rating.

I know my prob isn't the rating itself (if it's right for the movie then it's right) but more the cutting. I mean I knew they had cut a couple of memories and what not but then I also hoped they'd do the big scenes justice like going for the locket or sectemsempra etc.
I don't know, normally with the other movies I'm quite happy to look at it from the perspective of "it's a movie adaptation and things will be different", but with HBP (my fav book) I've been really worried that the essence of the movie itself will be lost in all the silliness. I hope it isn't and I hope the same wonder I felt when I first read it is in the movie... but I guess now I'm not holding my breath.

This is rubbish.Thers so many pg 13 worthy things:sectumsemptra, the inferi, the snogging, the scene of harry and dumbledore, there has to be some language(a couple bloody hells from ron), and what about dumbledores death, katies locket scene, and harrys connection with voldemort! It has to be more dark than ootp or gof! I was so excited about this movie, they already postponed it and they need to make up for the horrible 5th movie!Give me something to look foward to in all this twilight madness!!!!

Dollars to dimes the movie is crap. I told you so.
All I can say is we'll probably see at least one R-rated movie in the series (probably Part 2 of Book 7 - Part 1 is probably 13). Either way, I'm not watching.

Our best hope is that Peter Jackson suddenly becomes a hardcore Potter fan and a few years from now decides to make remakes!
But seriously... I've got to agree about what you've said about WB. What pisses me off the most about WB is that they don't care whatsoever about doing the books justice because no matter what they do, so long as they produce something that somewhat resembles the story, they're normally guaranteed to rake in huge sales at the box office.
*Sighs*
I had thought, given HBP is a bit smaller, that we would be guaranteed a somewhat better adaptation than the last two films, but after this and having heard your own worries about the movie I've really got a bad feeling about it. Though, to be honest, I haven't had high expectations since after CoS. My expectations for PoA were not small but diminished due to Richard Harris passing and such, but after PoA I can't say I've had high expectations at all. What's sucks about news like this is that my expectations for HBP have been a bit higher, at least, but now I don't know what to think. =(

This is ridiculous!! First the movie release date is pushed back because of Twilight and then it is not as dark as the previous films. WB might as well rate it G so that they can earn more money. That is why they pushed the release date to summer. *angst angst angst*

HBP wasn't pushed back because of Twilight, Summit just took advantage of HBP's empty slot... Though I like Twilight, I highly doubt something like Twilight could have competed against Harry Potter... mind you, if what I'm hearing about HBP is correct...

This is disturbing. GOF and OOTP are PG-13, but Half-Blood Prince which was definitely not a PG book gets even lower? They've screwed up this movie even more than I thought. Despite all the hate I've been spewing at this movie (and the series in general) I thought the trailer looked good, mainly I thought it was funny. Now I know that they spent so much time turning it into a comedy (how many times have we heard the cast saying "this one is much funnier") that they've completely lost sight of what the series is.

OK everybody. Calm down!
List of Movies with a PG-rating at are AWESOME:
1. Poltergeist
2. Jaws
3. Beetlejuice
4. Gremlins
5. Princess Bride
6. Runaway Bride
7. Remember the Titans
8. Star Wars
9. Chronicles of Narnia
10. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Those are just a few. And the first couple definitely have some questionable content. I think it's not so much about the themes, but how much they show of those themes. They can make something terrifying while maintaining a PG rating, just by the way they film it. I'm not going to worry until I see it. I love some PG rating movies.
