News comes today that the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie will be rated
PG in the U.S. "for scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality" by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America).
The MPAA
rates PG as:
A PG-rated motion picture should be investigated by parents before they let their younger children attend. The PG rating indicates, in the view of the Rating Board, that parents may consider some material unsuitable for their children, and parents should make that decision.
The more mature themes in some PG-rated motion pictures may call for parental guidance. There may be some profanity and some depictions of violence or brief nudity. But these elements are not deemed so intense as to require that parents be strongly cautioned beyond the suggestion of parental guidance. There is no drug use content in a PG-rated motion picture.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is scheduled for release on July 17, 2009. This will be the first Potter film since Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004 to be rated less than PG-13.

I am actually quite disappointed with this. Does this mean they cut THAT much out?!

The other films were PG13...Huh? I always thought they were G honestly. Seriously? Anyway basic knowledge most film franchises like to get a lower rating, they like to aim for G because it opens the audience base more. Look it up true fact. A lot of studios will freak if they can't get a G rating on something.

Hopefully the rating is just very roughly done. This, or younger spectators have developed a fondness for violence and scary scenes. Another toned-down version is not an option. This is not a Disney movie.

The last two were rated PG-13 and this one's got a PG? That's very surprising to say the least. And the last two weren't scary at all. Wonder what this will be like.
Good news for the younger lot though. :)

Seriously? A PG rating? I wouldn't think that this one, of all the movies, would be rated less that PG-13.

I guess thats good and bad! I think its kinda weird that after the last two movies being PG-13 that this one will be only PG. I hope it still is intense at the part at the lake.
I also will have to take my brother to see it. *sighs*

PG rating, huh?
Guess that means they completely stuffed it up.
I have very very low expectations of this film and I really hope that I am not disappointed.
I guess this movie will be as close to the original as Queen of the Damned was.

Spot On Lord Zimkel.
I guess it will be like when the US companies get the original japanese animes and cut and chop and change so much out they turn an M/R rated anime into a G rated one.
And the worst thing about all this is that the director is doing Movie 7 (part 1 and 2), which means the next 3 movies are going to be fluffy bunny rubbish and not stay true to the books.
For starters, have they left the bit in where Ginny puts the Potions book into the Room of Requirement? Do they not see that stuffs up the rest of the story? Guess not, as they are just after box office dollars.
The sad thing is, that whenever they do anything HP related, its always aimed at kids and anyone over the age of 16 that turns up is given a look like "aren't you too old for this?"
I think I will see this movie on cheapo tuesday.
Or maybe when it goes to the rental store, as a weekly.

Aw. Why PG? Now all the little ones are going to fill up the theater, if thy aren't watching one of those other kiddie movies that are out then. It's a change, for sure, from all the PG 13 Harry Potter movies that were out. But I guess it's not that much more of an age gap than PG 13 was, because I still saw young children anyways. It's never been a problem for me, anyways, because since the Harry Potter movies became PG 13 I've been able to see them, on my own or with others, being above 13. Much. I guess, though, that as the Harry Potter fans grow older, the orignal fans will be the majority of the crowd, since younger kids don't really have much knowledge of it as these newer trends aimed at young kids. As long as I finally get to see Half Blood, I'll be happy. I just don't like sticky floors and talking during the movie, as the case always is where I live, in the theaters.

Wow. I would think that HBP would have been PG-13. I would think there would be worse stuff in this one than in the previous movies. I guess it all depends on what they put in the movie. Hopefully it won't be disappointing.

That's completely ridiculous I can't understand why a book with such sexual innuendos and constant violence can earn a pg rating as a movie.

Basilina: I'm talking about the MOVIE, not the book.
In the MOVIE - Ginny hides the book in the ROR. Which stuffs up movie 7 royally.
There is a clip on youtube with the notes from the script.
But I got my information from a review of a screen testing of the film - that information is accurate. Not 100% on the youtube one (someone who saw the screening will have to confirm).
