A very interesting article
comes online today in regards to the effectiveness of DVD sales on the Harry Potter franchise.
The article mentions that while Warner Bros. made a huge profit with DVD sales of the first movie in the series, each additional movie has dropped in sales, and due to the decline in DVD sales over the last two years may have an an effect on Half-Blood Prince sales.
To help ensure that fans want to see the movie as well as purchase DVDs marketing has been "more contemporary, a little bit more in your face" according to Sue Kroll, Warner Bros. president of worldwide marketing:
To keep it fresh, we used all these wonderful moments in the movie -- the trials and tribulations of growing up, these new environments and the urgency of Harry trying to discover more information about who he is and what led to his parents' death.
To appeal to the now older fans, marketing has created darker and more intense trailers, while also showing individual lighter, amorous aspects of the movie, which started airing a full 11 months before the movie premiering.
On a more enjoyable note, the article mentions that the Half-Blood Prince DVD will be "released during the heavy gift-buying holiday season" and a new picture of David Yates and Jim Broadbent accompany the article.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opens July 15, 2009. [/quote]

Well I'm sure I'll buy the DVD, but they seem so overly concerned with money. I'm sure the DVD will be successful in any case and I think they should just RELAX.

I know that I will be one of the ones rushing out to buy it the day it's released. I guess they are comparing to Twilight.
As I've always said, they could go the LOTR route and release the extended versions. I would probably buy those too...I have both in the LOTR series. ;o)

It makes sense, I guess, expecially with all the piracy these days, but I can't imagine NOT buying the DVD for each Harry Potter movie. By the way, the trailer's amazing - basically perfect. Maybe my parents will actually consider watching HBP. =P

Warner Brothers partially deserves this. I love Harry Potter butmoving the movie release back almost a year was the stupidest thing they could have done. And now they are paying for that mistake in multiple ways

Well, it would not have been elven months if they had not made the inane, greedy decision to push the release date back eight months. But that's just my opinion...

I'll be buying it for sure when it comes out on dvd. I don't know why WB worries so much, they make enough money as it is. The dvd will sell when it's released, they always do.

From what I just read they spent 250 mil to make the movie and 155 mil just to market it. Unbelievable! The marketing for this film is geared more to the teen and adolesent age group because as the films progressed the movie goers got older and they wanted to recapture the younger set.
It's clearly becoming more and more about the money and how to get the most people to come see it. I'm loosing the fun and the fantacy and the enjoyment when I read things like this. What ever happened to pure joy of just going to see the next one when it came out.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

It's Harry Potter, or course the DVD is going to sell really well, even if it goes on sale in the middle of february. Do they know how many HP fans there are in the world? Its sort of a no-brainer in my opinion.
Personally, I am buying the DVD(again, no-brainer). After the 7th HP movie comes out, I'm going to get that DVD also. I always get the 2 disk deluxe edition DVDs. After that comes out, they're probably going to make a Blu-Ray Harry Potter gift set(probably selling at about $150 just to complete the blu-ray collection.

I find it hard to believe that slow DVD sales will affect the sales of HP & HBP because we die hard Potter fans will buuy it. We may be more careful with our money in today's economy but we have our priorities!

That's exactly what it was for me all the way up to the moment they pushed the movie back so far. Then it was extra waiting and the magic was totally lost.
Don't be so stupid WB. The fans will buy the DVD as they always have. Would it hurt to put in some bloopers? Less games on the DVD and more behind the scenes? Please?
