Hollywood.com reviews 'HBP': "Mr. Potter, Meet Mr. Oscar" Popular (3699)

Hollywood.com has postedopens in new window an early review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince after attending an advance screening of the film. Writer Paul Dergarabedian gave the film a rave review, stating:

Well, stand back because now the Potter-loving beast in me has been unleashed after having witnessed a film that was not only exquisite in its production values, but was also charming, funny, scary, enchanting, moving (stop me, the adjectives could go on and on) and dare I say, sexy. Brilliantly directed by David Yates (he directed 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a tour-de-force that combines style and substance, special effects and heart and most importantly great performances from all of the actors young and not-so-young.

He goes on...

Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter himself, has evolved into a really fine young actor who gives the film its emotional core. However, if Radcliffe is the heart, Michael Gambon is the film’s soul as Albus Dumbledore; Gambon gives a powerfully subtle performance as the de-facto father figure to young Mr. Potter. Of course, the always great Alan Rickman gives another menacingly creepy and memorable turn as the evil and duplicitous Severus Snape. The cinematography, music, set design and costumes are all amazing, and the film has a truly rich look to it reminiscent of the best of the old-school Hollywood epics.

Really, I think OotP was better than the rest (Kill me if you please) and David Yates did superb job, after watching the ten minute french feature thing I cannot wait any longer! Bonnie looks like the Ginny I imagined (again, it was like three minutes long, the Ginny scene) and even Dan's acting has improved! Maybe it is Oscar Worthy, we'll just have to wait and see (sadly).

DFTBA (Don't forget to be awesome)

That was a great review and I can't wait to see the film! Don't know why people are so "surprised" Dan might be good after all the kudos he got for "Equus" and "My Boy Jack". And all the American teenyboppers who badmouth Sir Michael Gambon just make me .... grrrr... all the wonderful parts he has played over the years, he's a fabulous Dumbledore! Much as I liked Richard Harris, he looked like a Christmas decoration and acted like a Father Christmas type figure. Give me Michael Gambon any day, a Dumbledore that is a bit more of an action man, not just a figurehead!!

Really nice to hear some reviewing of the film. Half Blood Prince is a favorite of mine and it has so much potential to be a great movie. So it's encouraging to hear some positive opinions about it.

Wow, what a review! I was excited for this film already, but now I'm just giddy! Only 15 more days! I saw an advanced screening for Order of the Phoenix 2 years ago, and that was incredible. I was quite surprised when it didn't get nominated for ANYTHING at the Oscars. I was really peeved, I thought it deserved so much more, especially when films like 'Norbit' snagged a nomination, a film with no substance whatsoever compared to Harry Potter, but I digress. Maybe, possibly, hopefully, this time around, Harry Potter will finally get an Oscar (and, dare I say it, perhaps more than one?). If this film gets an Oscar, I know that the Deathly Hallows films will blow people away, especially with David Yates directing, thank goodness! Great review!

Am I the only one who HATED OOTP? Ugh David Yates killed the franchise for me. Gambon is a fantastic actor save for the freak scene in GoF (okay, most of GoF DD was off).

The review doesn't really compare the movie to the others much. Daniel's ability to act, I'll vouch when I see it. I hope Emma is free of hyperactive eyebrows syndrome, that really started to irk me.

While Snape's character is supposed to be WAY younger than Rickman, he's always done a superb job.

I think Tom Felton's performance is the one I'll be waiting on.

Still sneaking in to see this movie though. Effing money-hogs.

I totally agree with FawkesRox315. A lot of people hated OOTP and i can't figure out why, really, it was the first harry potter film ever since the chamber of the secrets to portray the harry potter world how it is actually supposed to be.
Anyway, i'm SO excited to watch the half-blood prince film. I mean, with all these awesome reviews from known and respectable people i think we can only expect the best. Accio 15th of July! (And meanwhile, i'll buy and play the half-blood prince game - can't believe that it's being released tomorrow! I'll be the first one to buy it, the demo was incredible.)
