For the second time in three years the "Harry Potter" books have been voted in the top spot in Angus & Robertson's Top 50 book poll. The poll, taken by kids aged from five to 17 were given a month to vote online, in store and through their schools for their all-time favourite books, with the Roald Dahl stories, in second place.

With just about three weeks to go till the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" we have a new article from a reporter who was one of the first to interview the author, JK Rowling, on what has now become a worldwide phenomenon. The reporter reminisces on meeting JK before the publication of the books, mentions the good and bad publicity and how JK turned the tables on the press. There are also a few lines from three fans that met JK over 10 years ago when she visited their school as a completely unknown author.

A Minnesota educator reminisces about his days as a foreign student teacher in the UK, when 13-year-old Joanne Rowling was a pupil: "I was contacted by the teachers in England who I had stayed with, and they told me that the Harry Potter author had gone to Wyedean at the same time I was there and perhaps I knew her," Neuschwander said. It turns out he had.

A poll conducted to mark the UK's Sci-Fi Channel's 10th anniversay has named "Harry Potter" the greatest screen fantasy hero of all time. Potter beat out Spiderman, Doctor Who, Han Solo, Neo from The Matrix, Spock, Yoda and Batman.

JK Rowling's agent, Christopher Little, reports today that 300 million copies of the "Harry Potter" books have been sold worldwide. More than one-third of all copies were sold in America and the books have been translated into 63 languages, the latest one being Farsi.

In a opinion survey of 700 10-to-13-year-old kids the Harry Potter books were voted the most imaginative kids' stories for the Prince of Wales Arts & Kids Foundation's StoryQuest storytelling festival in the UK.

Her books, which in a study released by the American Library Association are among the most re-read fiction, have sold over 260 million copies worldwide.

On the final day of 2003, Slate published a small recap of events started by literary critic A.S. Byatt's scathing July review of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." In what Salon called a "goblet of bile," Byatt opined that JK Rowling's enormously popular series was written for "people whose imaginative lives are confined to TV cartoons." Her comments touched off a lively and very heated counteroffensive in the HP community.
