While this was unofficially reported back in May, the Boston Globe
today says:
Conductor-composer extraordinaire John Williams
has signed on to write the score for the next Harry Potter film, which recently began production and is due out next year. Williams supervised the music for the first two movies, but for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban he's actually writing it. (If all goes well, he'll do the score for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film based on J.K. Rowling's novels.) Williams is booked for a slew of movies in 2005, including a Steven Spielberg
remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty slated to star Jim Carrey, and Indiana Jones 4 and Star Wars: Episode III.
Thanks to The Leaky Cauldron
for the heads-up on today's info.
Editor's note: I'm pretty sure he wrote and produced the first two soundtracks, not just supervised. Does anyone have proof to the contrary?

I believe he wrote the music for the first movie, but did not write it for the second movie. He had other committments and he helped, but another director assisted. (not sure of his name)

lynnith says:
John Williams wrote a couple new themes, and William Ross adapted them for the film. So while technically Williams composed it, Ross did all the dirty work.
Personally I was hoping that he'd be too busy and we'd get a good composer for the third film, but you can't have everything in life I guess.

At first I was hoping that someone else would do it -- no offense to John Williams, he's good but I was curious to hear how others would do a Harry Potter score. But with different direction, different uniforms (in the film), and different who-knows-what-else his composition could link the 3 films together to give them some sort of consistency.

How dare you question John Williams' musical greatness. ;)
So what's your beef with him? Yes, he often makes very grand, bombastic scores, but also very beautiful, delicate themes. Did you think he was just a bad match for HP, or in general? I could sympathize with you if you're talking Potter specifically, but in general - Superman, Star Wars (the originals), E.T., Schindler's List, even Chris Columbus' Home Alone all had perfectly crafted music, IMHO.
*I* think Columbus just counted on Williams' score for several scenes in Potters 1 & 2, and it didn't work. And it doesn't work that way - a score compliments a movie, not the other way around.

Chuckles at this crazy exchange... I personally adored the themes for the first movie... as far as that type of music goes. ::wrinkles nose:: It just isn't really my type, and sometimes seems a LOT like other things he has done. It might have been nice to have a new idea.

It's funny because when ever i hear the first few notes from the first and second movie i literally jump up and look where it's coming from. I don't know but maybe it's me. I agree that a diffrent composer should be used, but i think it would kill some of that magic that John Williams puts into the movies. But sometimes difference is a good thing...

I do the same thing! Ok, odd and random fact about me: I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease around Christmas time this year. (It's all gone now, yea! Chemo is all done too, Double yea!) Whenever I was at the clinic, a different kid would have something Harry related going on. An 8 year old girl, Sarah, was always watching one of the movies on DVD, and I would ALWAYS know when she was there, because I could hear the music!

Gopotter 2004 -- sorry to hear about your chemo - hope you are doing well. In ref. to John Williams - I truly enjoyed the music of both the HP movie & I don't care who did it, then again I didn't run out to buy the soundtrack for either movies.

John Williams is considered a master around here. He ain't a god like Gustav Holst *salivating over Mars, Bringer of War* but he's pretty darn close.
I wish that the composers would remain the same cause if they don't you end up woth something like "The Mummy" series. We go from Jerry Goldsmith who did the first "Mummy" score to Alan Silvestri who did the "Mummy Returns." Listen to "Mummy Returns" title track. That one track is the whole movie, while Goldsmith actually tells a story.
So... FINGERS CROSSED FOR JOHN WILLIAMS!!

ooo I was relieved to see other people question John W too ... I don't like him too much. Sometimes its just too much, too big, it swallows the movie. But then Danny Elfman can be too quirky, Jerry Goldsmith, well I don't think too much of him either. The sound track on CoS was good but I thought soundtrack for PS actually detracted from the movie. My standout favourite is Angelo Badalamenti but I really don't know what he'd do to Harry Potter.
Just my 2 knuts, its worth nothing:)

Fred and/or George says:
The score for Sorceror's Stone is (pardon the pun) magical. I can't help be reminded of the music Williams created for Home Alone--not a bad thing, in my opinion. However, Williams wrote little new music for Chamber of Secrets (themes for Dobby & Fawkes), and William Ross's "adaptation" of the origninal score sounds... well, just like the original score. As excited as I was to see Chamber in the theater, I was slightly jarred by the repetitive score. I felt like I was listening to the first movie again, but with new images and dialogue. Granted, the film is usually scored late into a production, and Chamber began production the week Sorceror's Stone released. I can understand Williams not being able to fit an entirely reworked soundtrack into his schedule in such a small time frame, but I couldn't help feel a little cheated.
For some in-depth information see the review of the second soundtrack at http://www.cinemusic.net/reviews/2002/harry_potter_chamber_of_secrets.html
