Thanks to The Leaky Cauldron
for pointing out this Washington Post article about fan fiction
. Incidentally, TLC editor Megan Morrison, who also operates SugarQuill.net
is included in the story:
In the past few years, a curious literary genre known as "fan fiction" has been flourishing. The term refers to all manner of vignettes, short stories and novels based on the universes described in popular books, TV shows and movies. The explosion of these part-original, part-borrowed works has set authors of fan fiction against some media companies in a battle to redefine the line between consumers' right to "fair use" and copyright holders' rights to control their intellectual property.
Fan-fiction creators say their work represents the emergence of an art form that takes advantage of all that the Internet was built for. They invoke the First Amendment and say that under fair-use laws they have a right to create what they want as long as they are not trying to profit at the expense of the original material. But some book, music and movie houses argue that fan fiction is more plagiarism than high art and have demanded that operators of Web sites remove the offending material.
Rowling has unofficially sanctioned some fan-fiction sites by leaving them alone. To many of those that feature adult material, however, her agents have sent sharply worded cease-and-desist letters.
The author is "flattered by genuine fan fiction," said Neil Blair, an attorney for the Christopher Little Literary Agency, which represents Rowling. But she has been alarmed by "pornographic or sexually explicit material clearly not meant for kids."

I love the fan fiction some people write for Harry Potter. As for it being sexual I disagree most fan fiction is NOT sexual.

I absolutely despise fan fiction. I find that about 75% of it is pornographic and it makes me mad. Thats just my opion though, I know loads of people love it. However, I think people should just keep most of that stuff to late night dreams.

I love fanfic, I can never get enough. I read all forms - pornographic or not. I am open to everyone's ways of thinking, as long as its well written.
I think its wonderful that JK has acknowledged fanfic, and is not taking such drastic steps. I, too, would probably cringe if two of my favourite characters were descripted, well, i'll leave it to your imagination...
However, I will continue to read, love, and support all types of fanfic. In the end - is it really doing anyone harm?

I think FF's are great. I even did my very own first chapter of Ootp which people seemed to like. I was supposedf to do a chapter 2 but didn't
I really do hate sick people who think they can be funny or peverse by making horrible FF's about Harry Potter.

I really don't give a care about if people like Fan fiction. If you like a creative mind, go ahead, if ya don't say anything bad about it. Yeah most of them are pronographic, but not all of them. I've written fan fiction myself just to help pass the time until OTP came out.

I hate when a couple people ruin fun for a majority of people. Some of the stories have actually substance to them. I do believe that the ones making rude and obsein stories should be punished.

Suffice it to say, there's a wide variety of fan fiction for a very diverse audience. After reading the first four books so many times, you yearn for something new, and fan fiction can fill that desire.

I love fanfiction, and I write/read it. There are some places on the net (namely sugarquill.net and gryffindortower.net) that host basically the best fanfiction. Most of it on fanficiton.net is crap...good FF is hard to find these days!! I am a H/G shipper :)

I like reading fan fiction in my spare time. It gives me something to do. There is also the fact that a lot of fan fiction is really awesome.
Fan Fiction is really ok. It's not sexual or whatever. Most of it is really good. My favorite realstic one is by LogicalRaven. Awesome. However, it is the only one that makes sense that is good. There is another one called Bring Me To Life that I really like. It's not realistic though.
