Highland Council yesterday defended a school principal's decision to take earnings from pupils acting as extras in the latest Harry Potter film. Youngsters at Lochaber High School have been asked to forfeit their £35-a-day fee for every school day worked on the set.
The move has apparently angered some parents because children from a nearby school also working on the movie are being allowed to pocket their money.
Kinlochleven High School Principal Jim Sutherland accepted a donation of £90 from the film's makers Warner Brothers to cover any administration costs.

I think it's the parents that are upset, not the kids. They also got to keep money from weekends and holidays. I would be thrilled to skip school and be in a Harry Potter movie even if I wasn't getting paid. Besides, the parents had all signed a form saying that it was okay for the school to have the kids' earnings so they shouldn't complain. JMHO :-)

I don't have my handy pocket convertor thing, but I think that's around $55-65 dollars a day in US dollars. I'd be upset at the other school, but it could still be worth working on the set and dressing up in cloaks and hats depending on how many days you were being filmed. After all, the move would be out of my hands, but working on the movie wouldn't be.

Well its not like the principal is doing anything bad with the money, apparently the money will be going into school funds which will help the students out in the schools. I would be honored to be in the films, I dont think the students would really care that much, just the experience should be enough.

While I think we'd all agree to be in the films for free, and money going to worthwhile causes are good, I don't think the principal has any right to not allow the students to have the money. The parents of the students yes, but not the principal.

I don't think it makes any sense that they should HAVE to pay! I agree with Peitouche. It just isn't the school's right.

it says the parents SIGNED a paper saying it was okay for the school to take the earnings, then they made a fuss. The parents could've just not signed the paper.

It is $50.81 per day in the States. I would like to be in a Harry Potter Movie, I might pay that much if I'd had enough.

I know we would all pay to be in Harry Potter but the real question is does the school have the right to just take student earnings with out real justification?
I don't think so. And I would bet this would NEVER happen in the US. Our labor unions are much to strong. That's what Hermione needs to do Unionize the House Elves. She can be the Magical Norma Rae.

lisahes...they're not actually paying 35 quid, they're just giving what they would've been earning to the school. That is, they're not receiving any money to be in the film but they're not physically paying their own savings.

I think that's kinda crap of the school ... but anyway, at least the kids aren't losing any money they had in the first place.

The kids got paid £35 a day by WB to be in the movie. they didn't have to pay to be in it. It's just that their Head took their money and used it for the school because they weren't in school at the time. It's horrible. Truely disgusting.

I would also love to be in the HP movies, the principal i don't know but it seems to be the parents who are more outraged than the adults.

i dont care if i had to pay to be in the harry potter movies, even as an extra. I want to be someone in the movie that has a talking role but its not gonna happen cuz i live in canada and you have to be british to be in the movies, even though i do a good british accent. its tough for me to know that i will never get to be in those movies cuz im an actress and that makes me upset they wont let people from other nationalities not be in the movies, even as an extra. but yup back to the point of the article i think those kids should keep the money cuz they are actors hoo are doing a job so they should be able to get paid and keep the money!
yup, thats wat i think!
lov ya dan!!

Honestly, I'm Canadian so I would give ANYTHING to be in the film because they only hire British actors. But hey, I AM A PROUD MEMBER OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH!!! Lol...still, I would do anything and pay anything for a chance to be in a film. It would be an incredible experience, plus I love acting and its my dream. Still, I think it's wrong what the school is doing. Anyhow...I wish I lived in England!

This mother has the right idea: She said: "My daughter didn't mind at all. She was just thrilled to have been involved in such a hit film. It is a fantastic opportunity for the children and I certainly don't mind the money going to school funds. To many of them it was probably like a dream come true." My daughter would of love being in it and not to get paid. Just think you can tell your grandchild “I was in a Harry Potter movie”

Do the kids still have to pay even if they film after school? if they do that is unfair because they are not in school when they filmed.
