Dani Garavelli of The Scotsman gives her opinion
of the controversy sparked by Booker prize-winning author A. S. Byatt's scathing review of JK Rowling's work and her fans in this article published in the New York Times. Garavelli puts Potter fandom for adults in perspective, taking particular issue with Byatt's assumption that adults reading Harry Potter do so only for 'comfort'.
She also praises Rowling's restraint in not giving in to the temptation of replying to such evocative yet fruitless statements.
See Byatt's original article and Garavelli's reply in the links above.

I appreciate what Mrs. Garavelli is doing on behalf of J. K. Rowling and her fans. And I think knowing that JKR isn't getting involved in the "Byatt Bashing" because it could put a bad rep behind her. Thanks again Dani Garavelli

It's nice to know that there are more of "us" than there are of A.S. Byatt's kind. So take that Umbridge..uh, I mean A.S. Byatt. :o)

Very good article. I'm glad that JKR not involved in the bashing. Shows she beyond that. She has some interesting points: about reading not being the same when you get older-you do have things back in your mind about things that need to get done. (Still its nice to escape for a few hours)
Another point: Whats wrong with getting children to read more. Yes our children don't read enough. Isn't it better for them to read then to play games all the time.
I agree about the adults "some adults are trying to recapture something of their own childhood, what’s so wrong with that?" Why shouldn't we remember some of the good books we read and enjoyed - to escape and believe that your in another world.

Why do people keep speculating why adults read the books? Can't they just accept that they are great books and that we don't need any excuse to read them?I think all this is kind of petty.

Who cares if adults read the books? Just as long as they are reading them, that is cool. Harry Potter has something for everybody, so everyone is going to enjoy reading them.
