June 4, 2004 is the confirmed for the release date of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and an orange feline of comic strip-fame, Garfield, may be going up against the wizard. Greg Dean Schmitz of Yahoo! Movies
gives us an update:
This movie has been slated for June, 2004 for about a year now, but only now do we know the specific date... June 4th. Another family-friendly movie, Garfield, had already lain claim to that date, but I expect the orange kitty movie will be padding off to another location to avoid the box office behemoth that is a new Harry Potter movie.

Surely we meant June 2004.....
I don't know that Garfield will budge. They might, but then again, they might not. What do you all think -- would it make even a million dollars difference to Garfield? I'm not entirely sure it would, unless there are a lot more fans of that oversized cat than I know of.

That cannot be right as it has just been updated that the movie won't come until May 14th, 2004, which means it'll give the next Harry Potter installment a range of time to be in the top of the box office.
Besides, there's proabably a bigger fanbase of Harry Potter fans than Garfield, so I'd say it won't matter as much.

I didn't know that they were making a Garfield movie either. I suppose it will be a CG cat...ugh. That might end up being as horrible as Scooby Doo. I agree with CowsOJMilk Soil - I don't think the HP movie will have anything to worry about.

What! Garfield's awsome! I never knew they were going to make a movie either. But between Harry and Garfield, Poa would be watched first.

I like both Harry and Garfield, though I think Garfield may go out for some lasagna on June 4 and then come back at a later date to avoid Harry mania.

As far as Garfield is concerned, I don't think it will stand a chance at the box office next to PoA. I also feel that the more screens PoA is being shown on the better--less crowds.

I wouldn't completely rule out Garfield. If Prisoner of Azkaban is likely to get darker and mature as the books do, its target audience may be older than it was before. So where would those young kids be taken to by their parents? The only kiddie movie available, which could be Garfield or some other release.

OH MY GOD why they are going to release the movie that long I thought they say the movie was finished already. We have to wait for a whole year.

Garfield? Not even a choice. I would see the Harry Potter movie first. Have no interest in Garfield. They could move up the HP movie date, no complains here. I know, I know, we don't want to rush it. Easter break for Garfield would be alright. Give the smaller kids something to do.

I used to love Garfield, but rissa and phoenixashes are right - it's been dreadful in recent years. Did Jim Davis die, or am I thinking of somebody else? I may be on crack.
Oh dear god, I hope Garfield is NOT live action. I never even saw Scooby-Doo for that reason. Can't they stick to classic TV movies like Garfield's Halloween and Garfield's Christmas?? Those are wonderful films.

I don't think there's a real match.. come on.. HP have a solid plot, Garfield is a strip comic then no so sure there's a so good story. Garfield will be launched after HP, to avoid the cat a bit of money..

Cheeser - You should really try the new Scooby Doo. I refused to see it, but ended up renting because of the kids. The computer generated Scooby is awesome and his interaction with Shagy makes the movie. Granted, I could have done without the rest of the movie, but it is worth a rental to see Scooby and Shagy.
Now if talking great animated movies made into a horible live movie, I hated "The Grinch", and the new "Cat in the Hat" doesn't look much better.
June 4, 2oo4, PLEASE HURRY!!!!

Yup, who ever planned to release the garfield movie the same time as hp movie 3 was really stupid. But, of course that's my opinion.
I know this has nothing to do with the article but, does anyone here know if jk rowling started writing book 6.

Harry Potter would win in the bok office. I mean, just send this forum to the people setting the date for Garfield's big screen debut, and they'll change it in a flash. I mean. Garfield would probably be cute, and funny, but it wouldn't do nearly as good if they set it for another date! Preferrably, before June 4th, 2004

TrueBluePotterFan - I think I liked The Grinch, I don't remember. I like most of Ron Howard's movies. And I'm hopeful of Cat in the Hat, since Mike Myers is doing it (isn't he?).
