It's the first time I heard another person read the book than Rufus Beck (he reads the books in Germany). Sounds very good. I agree with Hedwig, he does a great Hagrid. maybe I'll have the chance to listen to an English audio book in the future. Is there any chance to get some parts of the American OotP audio book? I really would like to listen and compare the English and the American version!

Very interesting! I really do like Steven Fry's voice. However, as an avid reader, I prefer to read the book son my own, creating the voices for the characters as I go! You know, my own little movie before Warner Brothers makes the real thing!

Wow, that is a good impression of the characters. However, I'm with Choralee, I prefer to read them on my own, and make up my own characters, putting it together in my mind until the movies come out themselves.

I couldn't get it to work, but maybe I'll get to hear the excerpts later. I kind of agree with Choralee about the books. I just don't like to listen to books on tape before I read the books. With the Harry Potter books that isn't a problem though, as I always read them the first day, and the audio books come out quite a long time after that! And 24 CDs is A LOT!!! How many hours is that? Well over a day!

ButterBeer: Yes, Jim Dale also performs the books in English, just the American versions whereas Stephen Fry reads the Brit versions. But there are other narrators in different languages; Bernard Giraudeau does the French ones, but that's the only other one I know off the top of my head.
SurferGurl Rox17: I agree with ya - I think Jim Dale's the better too! :P To me he seems more energetic & enthusiastic and the individual voices are much more distinctive.

I understand that there must be an awful lot of Americans on this site, but I really can't stand the fact that the British version of the books and now the audiotapes by a British person gets slagged off. It is not a competition but I do feel that I should defend Stephen Fry - since he is fab and hilariously funny.

I am soooo glad that they have posted these exerpts. As an avid (read obsessed) listener to Jim Dale's (US) versions of the audio tapes which I listen to regulary while driving to work, I was so glad to hear how Mr. Fry reads them. I won't get into the many opinions posters have about who does a better job at interpretation of JKR, from what I heard of Mr. Fry's, they both sound great to me. I do find it very interesting that both Fry and Dale seemed to have picked a characterization of Hagrid and McGonagall that closely resembles Robbie Coltrane and Dame Maggie Smith. It would be interesting to see the thought process in how they both came up with similar voices for those characters as well as whether or not it influenced WB in their choices for the parts in the movies. Anyway, what the exerpts also did was convince me that it would be well worth the expense to have both the US and UK versions of all the books on tape
to all of you who haven't had the pleasure that I have of hearing Jim Dale's versions of the US books or want to compare his choice of voices to Stephen Fry's, you can listen to rather lengthy exerpts from the first 4 books at the follwing link.....enjoy (I do)....fang
