David Thewlis
, who will play a werewolf in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is so good that he was nearly fired
as his bosses feared he would terrify young cinema-goers.
His character, professor Remus Lupin, spooks Harry and his fellow wizardry pupils when he changes into a monster at the full moon.
His stare and make-up get more intense and he goes into weird spasms. Then a stunt man takes over the part of the nine-foot werewolf, striding around inside a giant costume.

Hahaa.. too scary? NEVER! I keep waiting for the movies to be scary to us older fans, not just to the little kids. Maybe in a few movies we'll have to move up to a PG-13 rating- imagine that! They'd better not glaze over the graveyard scene in GoF- the cutting off of the hand might put it in PG13, but they'd still better keep that. I hope the werewolf is great, I really do, cause then it shows the dualism of Lupin's character better. Nine-foot werewolf in a costume? Hmm... hope that is convincing. Still can't wait til June!

Oh COOL! I wanna see the werewolf!!! That sounds really cool! The scarier the better! (for me, at least!)
Hahaha, too scary...who would imagine that?
No, I think they just meant that they were gonna cut the werewolf scene out or something. Or perhaps change his costume and make-up.
So I wonder how far they're into the filming.

The Basalisk was pretty scary for kids. I can't see this being any worse. I like having it real rather than fake.

I guess it's possible that he could get frightening with the screams and howls while changing, but I'm sure he'll perform to the audiences feelings and keep it simpler. I can't wait to see the end result. The whole "axing" must have been a joke, or at least it should be.

Oh please if kids are able to handle reading the books, then I think they can handle seeing a werewolf. And Lupin is anything but scary. I think the dementors are going to be more of a fright than Lupin anyways. If a parent is afraid the kid will get scared then just don't take them to see it. I personaly can't wait. The scarier the better!

Well..in COS the basilisk was pretty scary for the youngin's..so hopefully they'll be able to handle it, as for 'axing' Thewlis...ITS CODSWALLOP I SAY!!! (really dont know what that means-l-o-l) But the comment on David spazzing out and having spasms all over the place might not be suitable for a younger audience...o well! Im gonna go see it JUNE 4TH PEOPLE!

Who has ever heard of being fired for being too good at what you do? RIDICULOUS! They wouldn't dare take him out of the movie. He is too important.

Choralee says:
I can say that Chris Columbus would have never gone so far as a director to make Lupin and his transformation into a werewolf scary - so go Cuaron! So scary it was almost cut from the film? I sure hope no one makes that mistake! Lupin is so important, and the part with him turning into a werewolf is integral to the remaining plot of the story!
So PoA gets a PG-13 rating. It was bound to happen. Each book is scarier and darker in content than the last. Each book sees the characters becoming more involved and less naive about who and what they are dealing with. I agree with Alchemist530 - I hope that the full graveyard scene is included in the script of GoF. Hand and all!

That's actually good to hear; it means they seem to have captured the essence of a werewolf in his wolf state, which should be terrifying. I agree that this is essential to show the dual nature of this special kind of beast - especially Lupin, who is naturally very gentle. June 4 cannot come fast enough!

What bulls*** I never believe that he was nearly fired because he was too scary. Just a media hype to get us Potter fans go even more crazy with waiting for this next film then before.
It doesn't take much anyway.
