A lecture at Belmont University
will compare the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling
. Dr. Amy Sturgis will discuss how Tolkien and Rowling brought what was originally a children's genre into the realm of adult themes, including Death and Bereavement, Prejudice, Change, and Choice.
The lecture will take place on Friday, November 7th, at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. For more information, contact Cynthia Cox.

I don't think Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings should be compared as they are two entirely different series, both of which I enjoy reading. While both of them may share themes, I still don't like the concept of comparing the two. Just get a batch of Harry Potter fans and Lord of the Rings fans together and what do you get? A big fight over which series is better with tomatoes!

Hm...I don't know, LOTR and HP are different in many many ways. But I guess if you looked at it a certain way, they have similarities. Some people think of LOTR as a more adult read, I agree, but that doesnt mean that we have to put Harry into the sterotypical "kids" section. AHHH!!! HOW I HATE THAT STEREOTYPE!! *ahem* excuse me.. I'm just saying that they are totally different story lines, diff. people, and diff. authors who have totally different approaches to how they express themselves.

This is about good vs evil, friendship, destiny and fantasy in general. It's not about the pose of each book. That's what make's the books different everything else is similar. JRR wrote educationally while JK writes conversationally. Both are great in opinion

It would be sad if a battle over which series was better ensued over this literary discussion. I love both series and talking about the themes they share in common seems like an apt discussion. "Better" shouldn't come into it. They are different pieces of literature written by very different people and have different story lines and purposes. They need not be pitted against each other.

Harry Potter is fun and exciting, but the major advantage of the Harry Potter Series is that it is still open. We all know what’s going to happen to Poor Mr. Frodo in the end, but Harry…I’m dying to know how the series will end! The intrigue makes Harry Potter more exciting, but it will wane once the series is completed. However, LOTR has far greater applicability and depth to the Middle Earth that long term, it holds a greater place in my heart.

Sounds very interesting and I'm sure that you can compare LoTR and HP in some ways. At least the topics of the discussion, prejudice, change and choice, for example, can be found in both series.

It's cool someone is doing something like this dealing with to movies that draw tons of people when a new book/movie comes out in the series. It be neat to look at the similarities and differences between the two.

I agree with Hairy Potty and the others. They are completely different books and are two different moods. Just because they are both fantasy means nothing about the story line. Both are good in their own ways, (although I still love HP more). But I guess you'll never be able to stop people from comparing them.

I feel that something might spring up between hardcore LotR fans and hardcore HP fans over this. Personally, I think that both series have several things in common, and though LotR can be difficult to understand at times, both series have great messages to send to the readers. I really wish I could attend. Too bad.

I've found some similarities between both of the books, but its like comparing apples with oranges - they're two different books that are good in their own way. I guess they've been put in the fantasy category and are both well known. I'd like to see this lecture, but doesn't look like I will be. Maybe someone can put up a transcript.

I don't think they are different at all, actually. Both are coming of age. In most senses, ALL coming of age books are the same. And drat it, I LIVE in Nashville, and I can't GO because, although I magically have no school on Friday, I have play practice. GRUMP.

It appears that everyone is trying to compare these two stories. I fully enjoy Harry Potter but I just can not get into LOTR. If people must talk about these two stories together, it would be refreshing to list their differences.
