A surprise Christmas gift from Harry Potter creator JK Rowling is helping to brighten
the lives of hundreds of American children suffering from cancer.
Rowling has given a grant of £57,000 ($100,516) to the Dana-Farber Institute
in the name of Catie Hoch, a child she befriended while writing Goblet of Fire. The plight of nine-year-old Catie Hoch, who died after suffering from neuroblastoma, left "footprints on the heart" of the multi-millionairess author who read chapters of her then unpublished fourth book to the child over the phone.
The girl’s mother, Gina Peca, from Albany in New York said the Edinburgh-based author would always be special to her family.
She added: "Through Jo’s donation people recognise the name and they are very willing to help us, and be generous in whatever we are asking for."

I know that this is completely off from what the article is about, but when I see how generous she is I'm surprised that her father had to go out and sell the book through the auction the way he did to make money.
She seems like such a genuine person, big thumbs up for this... not to mention I was in Dana Farber for a bit when I was first born... so it holds a spot in my heart too.
way to go Jo.

Wow! That's great. Even more than the money, I'm impressed that she took the time to read chapters from the then-unpublished fourth book to the little girl who had only a little time left to live and loved the HP books. It makes you want to cry. Its great that j.k. is so generous with her time and money.

That was really really cool of J.K. to do for that little girl. I knew her heart was big for those less fortunate but i had no idea, not the money, her taking time out of her schedule to read her her new book.

Dumbledore's Army - I am so with you on the whole why-the-father-had-to-sell-the-books thing. He must really have a couple of cards missing from his deck...
JKR is so generous! And to be helping out an institution that provides such crucial care for the young - she is truly an asset to her family and to her benefactors!

There is no doubt this lady has class and a giving heart. When I first heard that she was reading GoF to this little girl before its release, JK instantly became one of my favorite celebs. I hope that every young person, and not so young person here, will take these gestures as a lesson of the type of person we should all be, regardless of our wealth, or lack of. Brava!

A sign that there is some hope left for humanity and civilization as we know it! A lot of celebrities dont do this kind of thing, or would only have done ONE of those options. Shame. Perhaps more celebrities will follow her lead.

I know that I have said this countless times, but JK is truly the most kind, thoughtful, unselfish, good star there is out there. I have heard some poeple on the net criticise her, saying that she only gives to charity as she is famous, and they think it gives her good publicity. But I truly believe that even if she wasn't famous, and she had the money, that she would donate to charity. She is just one of those wonderful people who are so generous and kind, who would give the shirt off their back. Good on you JK! Keep up the magnificent work!

That almost brought a tear to my eye. The money means very little, especially since she has so much of it, but to take the time out of her schedule to read chapters of an unpublished book to this little girl over the phone is amazing. I can only imagine how special that made that little girls last days.
