According to the next director in the Harry Potter franchise, Mike Newell
, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be the most expensive movie ever made
.
The film, which starts production in April, will cost an estimated £170 million ($308 million), reports the Sunday Mail. That's £5 million ($10 million) more than the entire Lord of the Rings series.
Newell commented that directing a Potter picture carried huge responsibilities:
"I think of myself as being really lucky. I'm going to make the most expensive film there has ever been. These things are not like ordinary films they are world events. I have millions of 10-year-olds who must not be disappointed. Making Harry Potter is like being President of Brazil. It is a colossal undertaking."
Newell also commented that finding an eight-foot-tall French woman to play Hagrid's love interest, Madame Maxime, has caused him a giant-sized headache.
"We are casting right now. I've been in Paris, looking for giant women and French schoolgirls."

movies to date:

That's really interesting. Maybe it'll get some more recognition from people other than Harry Potter fans. I'm so glad they're putting so much effort into this. I felt as though the first two movies were kind of rushed. I'll totally be counting down on my calendar as soon as we know when the movie is going to be released.

Funny, but I don't think that millions of 10-year-olds will be the only ones disappointed if he messes up the movie.

O wow!! is that good or not?? i mean this movie better do good for all the $$ being put into it. but i have a feeling it will. i thnk its going to cost so much because the book is really long so the movie has to measure up to that which means more actors and sets and...it'll be worht it though.

10 Year Olds -- someone needs to clue Mr. Newell in if he thinks he is making a film for just 10 year olds. How about all the teen agers, 20 year olds, etc., etc. who love the books and films. I don't think age has anything to do with it.
I am surprised that this film will be even more than Return of the King with all its marvelous special effects. Perhaps the fact that it was filmed in New Zealand where it might be less expensive to film has something to do with it. Also it started filming at least 4 years ago so might have been less expensive as Alessandra said.
HpAzn look to be fairly new so missed all the discussion that India is officially considered a part of Asia so there is no discrepancy there.

This better be the most expensive movie ever made, as well as the longest! I agree with all of you, it should not be a "kiddish" movie, it should match the maturity of the book!

I had completely forgotten about madame maxine. The fourth movie should be the coolest movie ever because of all the cool things that should be in it. Now i'm thinking about the durmstrang's ship and the underwater merworld. This is going to be awesome i can't wait until they start production enough to get some pictures out.

When newell said that about the ten year olds, he was referring to the largest amount of people that will come to see the movies. i'm sure he knows that there is also a following of older "kids" but there is no doubt that the younger kids will be the larger percent of viewers. i'm sure looking for eight feet tall women isn't an easy task hahaha. good luck on that.

Wow, 308 Million... if anyone feels like giving me a million out of that it wont hurt the budget at all, and would make me extremely happy. Heh...
I can't see how 308 million can go into only 2.5 hours... unless they're making a 4 hour director cut like LOTR, but who knows... should be interesting... but then again, you all need to remember that this isn't coming out for another 2 or so years. Don't hold your breaths...

That is incredible. We must be getting a full 3-4hour version. Personally I know more HP fans who are 30+ years old than I do 10 year olds and I teach elementary school. I wish people would stop labeling HP as a KID thing.
Ohhh welll.
