If you were hoping for a cinematic version of epic proportions for this year's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, you may be out of luck. According to Canadian television website CTV
, the movie may be the shortest of the series
so far.
Harry Potter fans who want to see every detail from the books translated into the screen versions might be uneasy over the projected length of Prisoner of Azkaban: less than 2½ hours, the shortest of the series so far.
This time, Rowling's story lent itself to a tighter script than the first two movies, said director Alfonso Cuaron, whose previous movie was the racy hit Y Tu Mama Tambien.
Keep in mind that the running time of Prisoner of Azkaban hasn't been officially confirmed by Warner Bros yet.

Sometimes all the items we want in a movie can be compressed into a smaller time frame. I love Cuaron's work in Little Princess, and it was not a very long movie, but it still told the whole story and then some. Do not give up hope!

I'll keep an open mind.. It hasn't been confirmed... and I'd rather have a great 2 1/2 hour movie, than a badly done 3 hour movie.. (keeping my fingers crossed)

Since the premiere isn't until June, I think we should reserve judgement on this article. I really don't think that the film has been completely edited yet.
It could well be as long as the other two.
We can only hope!

When they say it's under 2 1/2 hrs it could still mean it's 2hrs 25mins or something! And just think how much better (and therefore shorter than 2hrs 30mins) COS would have been if they cut the terrible ending out? Hopefully the end of the film will be clean and swift as it is a continuing after all.

Less than 2 1/2 hours??? Wow, that sucks. I was hoping it would be really long like the other 2, but I guess we don't really have a choice. Let's just hope the important things are in the movie, that they haven't forgotten any major facts...

I sure hope this is not confirmed, but I wouldn't be surprised. I know that the Director has definitely not followed the book, and I guess if you cut a bunch of things out (like Quidditch) than you can make a short movie. I just really don't see the point in ruining the best Harry Potter book, by not following the story line as it was told!!! What is next GOF is an hour and a half??

Only 2 hours and 30 minutes? i was hoping for something longer. if he cutted out some of the good parts in the book, well, than the movie won't be that good. but i bet it's great!

Well, here is a useless post. Since it hasn't been confirmed, I hope it IS longer. But quality is more important than quanitiy. (Unless it is Harry Potter, in that case, more is certainly better.) I was hoping with the seeming trend toward longer films, PoA & GoF would be longer, but for the sake of the story, not just to have a long run time. So, basically, ditto to what everyone else posted. I do think it will be a good film, though.

That is going to bite big time!! They had to really torture th e first movies with all the cuts they had to make just for time. I can just imagine more then half of book 3 being out of this flick now with that stupid length budget!!

That makes me so mad... the first two movies are short enough... when I was watching CoS I kept thinking "Wow, we're already at this point?" Everything moved so fast in that little bit of time... I worried about what is missing from this one.
