The author of the Harry Potter books successfully bid £50,000 ($62,669) for a dinner to be cooked by the television chef Nick Nairn and served by BBC celebrities. She also bought a motorized scooter for £70,000 ($87,735) and spent another £7,000 ($8,774) on a guided tour of Edinburgh conducted by Ian Rankin, the writer behind the Inspector Rebus crime novels.
Miss Rowling's money went towards the Leap for Meningitis campaign organized by Olivia Giles, a 38-year-old Edinburgh lawyer who had her hands and feet amputated after contracting the disease. Yesterday Miss Giles said of Rowling:
"She was extremely generous. It was out of this world."
Leap for Meningitis will benefit England's two leading meningitis charities - Meningitis Research Foundation and the Meningitis Trust.
