USA Today: J.K.Rowling on 'Azkaban' film Popular (31439)

J.K. Rowlingopens in new window gives an interview to USA Todayopens in new window, sharing her thoughts about the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie. In the article, she talks about the film's director Alfonso Cuarón, the dementors, and the eerie foreshadowing of what's to come in the last two books of the Harry Potter series:

Here's an excerpt of the full articleopens in new window:

It is almost as eerie as one of the plots from her beloved best-selling books.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling says that Alfonso Cuarón, who directed The Prisoner of Azkaban, which opens next Friday, inadvertently foreshadowed events that will happen in books six and seven, which she has yet to complete.

"I really got goose bumps when I saw a couple of those things, and I thought, people are going to look back on the film and think that those were put in deliberately as clues," Rowling says in an interview released by Warner Bros., which is distributing the movie.

Rowling cites Cuarón's "good intuition about what would and wouldn't work" in his film version, which is a less by-the-book take on her novel than the previous two films....

...[Rowling] sees the movie as "Alfonso's version of my world. It's his baby. For the very obvious reason that books and films are such different media, to do a very literal adaptation maybe wouldn't serve the material best, and I think he's done exactly what I hoped he would do. He's put a lot of humor in there, and I think it's fantastic. I'd be very, very surprised if most people didn't find their favorite parts of the book in that film."

J.K Rowling must really like it, she seems more enthused with this one than the previous two. And why wouldn't she be, it looks fantastic! I've only got 6 more days till I see it, its so hard to get through the day, I just want to see it now!

I think the movie is great. True it doesn't follow the books word for word and has added stuff but lik JKR said its a different media and the director shows his creative ness and gets his chance to show his interpretation of the books. Everyone who reads the books has a different "vision" of their characters and the way action takes place. Thats what makes reading fun and allows us to broaden our imagination.

If Rowling says that the movie is good, then you know it's gonna be good. I really enjoyed the film and I think that all of the HP fans will enjoy it.

This is why I like the movies, they take out all the unimportant stuff and they leave the foreshadowing parts which makes it easier to quess what will happen next.

Well, Harry Potter is JK Rowling's universe, and if she likes the movie, then the moviemakers did a good job. Very interesting comment on how the director intuited the direction of future Harry Potter stories. That gives us fans a clue.

I want to know why JKR got goosebumps... I didn't notice any bits that looked like clues. But I'm glad she liked it. Imagine if she had hated it... what would she have done then?

I think she means how Harry meets the Half Blood Prince, Godric Gryffindor in the Half Blood Prince, in the graveyard that Cuaron was told to leave out. Harry sees all the founders graves there and my guess is that he finds something important there by Godric's grave. McLagen, the new character, is the grave digger there I'm guessing.

Everyone may hate me temporarily for saying this, but I really hated the movie. Sorry, I'm a really annoying stickler for keeping things in movies like the book and everything just really bugged me... like singing bubble bubble toil and trouble at the sorting? Come on! Since when do wizards glorify Muggle's views of them! Shakesperian witches were nothing at all like JKR's portrayl of the magic world! Sorry, but I'd like to think that Jo said all those nice things about the movie just so people would see it and I'd like to think she's as steamed about it as me.

I love how that movie foreshadows things that weren't in the book- that's a great way to make it work with the books, even as separate as it is sometimes. Having seen the newest movie, GOF, I'm satisfied with the way they switched up a couple scenes to foreshadow future events in the story- tho it digresses significantly from the book, it helps to make the movies an entity of their own.

people are going to look back on the film and think that those were put in deliberately as clues,
I swear the budding romance between Ron and Hermione is one of those things. I, for one, never thought of it while reading the book.
