Life imitates 'Order of the Phoenix' Popular (6251)

A reader sent in this disturbing news from Reuters:

Couldn't believe it when I read this article about a Japanese teacher forcing a student to write an apology in his own blood. It is way too much like one of the most shocking scenes in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This real-life teacher had to lend the student a decidedly nonmagical box cutter to draw the blood to be used as ink.

From the articleopens in new window:

A Japanese teenager was forced by his teacher to write an apology in blood after dozing in the classroom, the school's principal said on Monday.

He said the boy was taken to the staff room of the school in Fukuoka City, southern Japan, after being caught asleep during a lesson. The 40-year-old male teacher handed the boy a box-cutter and paper and told him to write an apology in blood.

The teacher left the student, who then cut his finger and began to write an apology using his own blood.

The teacher is expected to return to work in a few days and neither the student nor his parents have requested a change in classes.

Fans of the Harry Potter novels will recall that the decidedly evil character Dolores Umbridge from the fifth installment forced Harry to use an enchanted quill to scribe various apologies and promises that scratched themselves into his hand as he wrote.

Thanks to Arlee for pointing out this shocking story and its coincidental relationship to Potter.

This is horrible! I cannot believe someone would actually do that to a child. And to think he's getting away with it! But maybe life is different in Japan. I mean, his parents are not even requesting another teacher. It must not be as important there as it seems to be here.

My god, this is absolutely disturbing, how could anyone take the story so seriously? That teacher wouldnt have a house anymore, and maybe Id find a better use than cutting my finger for that box cutter. ;)

OK I know this sounds completely cruel, but that is so funny!!! I mean It's incredibly horrible what the teacher did, but that is so uncanny how much it is like the book. Was the guy really mentally out of it??? In a totally non offensive manner I'm asking that, that is. And what do they mean "decidedly nonmagical" box cutter??? Did they think it was possessed?

Wow that is really nerving. Maybe it is the Wwestern view but I don't care that is shocking to see something like this as a punishment for children. I guess the parents weren't upset though that is rather add. Different cultures I guess.

That teacher was sick! He was too "Umbridge-ish" enough to do that to a student! He should be fired! Or the parents would at least file a complaint! That's not right!

Is this a common practice in Japan? The punishment certainly doesn't fit the wrong! I thought they were more civilized.

I am an American and I can't tell you how bad I feel about the torture in Iraq. I was really ashamed.

That's horrible. I can't believe the student's parents didn't request that something be done about that! I hope the teacher doesn't try and blame the Harry Potter books for it. That could turn out really bad for everyone! I'm completely disgusted with that teacher!
