J.K. Rowling has finally answered the question that many Harry Potter fans have been asking since the publication of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- Who exactly is Mark Evans?
The author provides some insight at her official site, JKRowling.com
. If you venture over to the FAQ section (click on the paperclips) and then to the envelope that says The Books, you will notice a piece of paper sticking out of the page. Click on that and then go to Poll to find out what she says.
Check out her introduction and setup here:
"What is the significance, if any, of Mark Evans?"
"I couldn't answer the poll question before now, because I've been making arrangements to take my family into hiding. It takes time to arrange fake passports, one-way air tickets to Bolivia and twenty four hour armed security."
"Why should I resort to such desperate measures? Because after you've heard this answer, I'll have to disappear for my own safety."
"Now before I get down to it (you can guess what's coming can't you?) I am going to put up a feeble pre-emptive defense. Firstly, you were all spinning highly ingenious theories about Mark Evans, so I thought that you would welcome the chance to hear the truth about him. Secondly, I tried hard not to raise hopes or expectations by adding the crucial words 'if any' to the question. Thirdly... there is no thirdly. I'm just killing time."

I think it's great that she finally but that rumor to rest. Even though I wish she would have picked a different surname, for everyone's sake.

I just love her sense of humour, hehehe. Sarcastic and funny!! Well, i didn't think Mark Evans was or would be an important character. She finally put an end to all those rumors and theories.

In spite of reading her whole post for the tenth time, I still find myself crying in laughter from her need to hide away from the fans out there! She is just a genius! Unfortunately, she has not went into hiding in Bolvia; I sighted her near my hometown two days ago...
Having learned that Mark Evans will not play a later role, hopefully she can start another poll on a question that actually plays a greater importance than we know of at the moment.

Yeah, I must say her delivery of the answer was very funny. She really has a way with words. Even she wanted the voters to pick another question. I myself didn't vote for the Mark Evans questions, though I was fooled into thinking he was important. Oh well, I guess we will all have to wait and see. Can't wait of HBP to come out.
Happy Over Analyzing everyone.

I was right! I was right! I said that Evans is a common name and that the character was probably meaningless. Good grief, I think that's the first time I was right about anything!

NOTHING! Mark Evans is just a background character, a 'red herring.' However, she does mention that she's checking "the FAQ poll hoping that one of the other questions might edge into the lead..." must mean someone has hit on the HBP. Now, which one is it?

Darn! I wanted the Sirius question to be answered so bad. Hopefully she put that one back on the poll for the next round. And hopefully there will be smarter people out there that actually want it answered this time. For crying out loud even SHE wanted to answer it.

It's too bad that the other questions couldn't have been answered because from what she was saying it would have given us a better clue as what's going to happen in HBP.
On a positive note, it's great that the rumor about Mark Evans has been dispelled and we can move on to possibly more important question!!

Well there goes my theory! hahaha. Although she could just be saying young Me. Evans has no significance to throw us off the trail I suppose I'll have to take her at her word and accept the "it was an honest mistake" excuse and move on in my HBP theorizing. I had high hopes for Mark though once upon a time....especially since in 2 of the 3 lines he's mentioned in it's remarked upon that he is in fact 10 yrs old...hmmm....oh well.
She cracks me up though.Poor Jo, I can just picture her cowering under her desk, frantically making her "travel" arrangements, hoping we don't all riot and come after her with pitch forks and torches in the night. Bolivia or BUST!!

Well, now I'm annoyed! I didn't vote for that question because I wasn't convinced that Mark Evans was anybody significant! Grrr! I wish she could have answered either of the other questions rather than the Mark Evans one!
You gotta hand it to Jo - she has a great sense of humour. I was giggling all through her message!

Well, aren't we all just simple fools...This proves there is also something as reading too much into things! Though I think its probably a good thing, a whole new storyline with that potential could have taken far too much space in the HBP anyway. Now it will be filled with loads of yummy other goodies...:)
