From Spider-Man 2's sensationalistic editor J. Jonah Jameson to Anchorman's ridiculously sexist Ron Burgandy, he says it'll only get worse when Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire comes out next year, featuring the slimy, quote-molding Rita Skeeter.
...reporters everywhere should protest the portrayal of dishonest journalists. Where's our lobbying group? Where's our Hollywood influence? Sure, Carrie Bradshaw and Ray Barrone are successful and wealthy columnists on their television shows, but that's not reality, that's science fiction.
And it's only going to get worse when the next Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, debuts in summer 2006. That story's journalist, Rita Skeeter, is a conniving, duplicitous, win-at-all-costs stinker. She'd make a good trial lawyer.
We should point out that the casting of Rita Skeeter is still anxiously anticipated, and the release date for Goblet of Fire has not been officially annouced. Last we heard, it was slated for late 2005.

That's the point of Rita Skeeter. She's supposed to give reporters a bad name.
I kinda wish this guy wasn't from Michigan. Makes MI look bad, in my opinion. Haha.

They are movies, they shouldn't play that big of a role. There's no way to change Rita Skeeter though. She is who she is. I cannot wait to see who plays Rita Skeeter.

Oh please, everyone knows it's just a movie... There are plenty of decent journalists in this country so why worry about it?
Haha, I actually liked Rita, sort of. She was a very interesting character to read... I can't wait to see who's cast for her!

I'm pretty sure there is not some mass conspiracy to undermine the world of journalism. I guess the person that wrote the article, just needed something to write about. It's kind of funny actually.

Okay, so now we can add journalists to the list of people who do not like our HP. Oh well.
Isn't the purpose of Rita Skeeter to portray the bad in reporting? To be the worst of reporting kind to harrass Harry and make life miserable for him? Kind of sounds like the paparazzi to me... not repsectable journalism. I have never equated her character with good reporting. I really do not think reputable reporting will be affected by GoF at all.
I cannot wait to see who is cast to play her!

OH come on!!!!!!! It's not a personal attack against reporters or anyone in the field... if they haven't read the books, she's like that in it and will be like that on screen!!! She is an awful character... but I'm sure JK wasn't out to point any fingers at real life reporters. Rita Skeeter's whole character portrayal is fictional. It's the reporters who are giving themselves a bad name by complaining and getting paranoid about a fictional movie!!! Get off it already.

that's none of his business if you ask me, its upto JKR what she wants her characters to be... so what if Rita Skeeter is a bad journalist, that's her character... and JKR made her that way, so this guy doesn't have any right to complain about it...

I think journalists need to realize that they are generally a dishonest bunch, especially of late. Ideally journalism wouldn't be plagued by the political slants found in their articles, but, well, there you are.

It will be interesting to see who's picked to portray Rita Skeeter. I'm trying to come up with a British actress who might fit but no one is coming to mind. It takes a smart person to outwit a journalist and I think Hermione did just fine, thank you very much. Professor MS, a journalism major? I guess we can still be friends, but I'm pleading the 5th on anything personal! Journalist-trial lawyer, both sides of the same coin! Thank goodness for your sense of humor and knowing when I am totally kidding.

Oh brother, honestly some people are just moronic. Yes, a lot of journalist have bad reps but not all of them. I highly doubt that a fictional movie about a fictional place is going to be taken very seriously by the public in regards to journalists.

Well, that's interesting. I wasn't aware there was an epidemic of reporter-bashing. But I don't think journalists should worry. People are still going to watch the news and read the papers, regardless of how movies portray reporters.
And I'm looking foward to seeing who'll play Rita. Hey, maybe they can get a real reporter - then she'll be really slimy! (Just kidding!)
