Many fans awoke today to news that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling had taken down the "Do Not Disturb" sign once again on a door at her official siteopens in new window.

At first it appears to be an empty room, but there's a bit more to it than that, and the prize is certainly worth the trouble. Here are step-by-step instructions for those who can't be bothered to figure it out on their own:

  1. Take a look at JK's noteboard (it's on the "Extras" page) for a new note at the top right. (Screenshot courtesy HarryPotteroFilme.comopens in new window)
  2. Go the the Do Not Disturb door and open. (Screenshot courtesy HarryPotteroFilme.comopens in new window)
  3. Turn on the light. (Screenshot courtesy itzipgopens in new window)
  4. Throw darts. Hit the following familiar numbers: 7 1 3. (Screenshot courtesy HarryPotteroFilme.comopens in new window)
  5. Enter the numbers found in step 1 as the combination to the safe that appears (it's 30-27-23). (Screenshot courtesy HarryPotteroFilme.comopens in new window)
  6. Click on the piece of paper in the safe. (Screenshot courtesy HarryPotteroFilme.comopens in new window)
  7. Read an excerpt from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince! (Screenshot courtesy itzipgopens in new window)

Highlight the following block of text to read the excerpt here: He looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp.

Woodfan's suggestion that it is Godric Griffindor is a good one but the only way he could enter the story would be if Harry enters a memory of him. How many memories of Godric are there likely to be 1000 years after he died?

Is is possible that Godric began some sort of dynasty and this is his decendant? A king with a princely son perhaps?

When I read the description I thought of Remus Lupin. He is so alone in the world now that I hope the new character turns out to be his father.

Perhaps it is all a big tease and this is just a description of the new DADA teacher. After all, there is a limit to how many pale, dark-haired male characters you can have in one book.

Rasial says:

I haven't heard of a character called Romulus Lupin yet but Remus never really spoke of his family and it could be he has a brother, in which case that is the logical name for him. If he is the half-blood prince I think the Lion man is their father and this is why the description sounds so like an older, scragier Remus.

One of the chapters is called Felix Felicitas. If the extract is from this chapter I don't think it can be the new DADA teacher because although I can't remember which chapter it was I know it was a fairly late one (something like 9,11 or 13). If the extract is about the DADA teacher then he must have more in common with a lion that just his appearance to have a later chapter titled what I roughly translate as the friendly cat, This suggests that in this chapter they discover he is an animagus with a lion from or some similar revelation.

I doubt if JKR is trying to tease us. I'm all for the Gryffindor theory. We haven't found out why the symbol of Gryffindor house is a lion. I had just assumed that it was because lions are traditionally associated with courage, but it could be because Gryffindor could tranform into a lion. There is the problem that even Dumbledore could not have known Gryffindor. My guess is that the lion is the Heir of Gryffindor, who might also be the Half Blood Prince.
