Cinesite, a visual effects company that worked on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, has divulged
details of various projects from the film, including how they accomplished time travel, the moving portraits, invisible thestrals and more:
Cinesite's team of digital effects artists back in Soho completed many effects sequences for the film. These included filling the ceiling of the Great Hall with computer generated Candles, creating the Enchanted Ceiling, the Monster Book of Monsters, Marauders' Map ink effects, various ghost and ghost horsemen effects and the stunning panoramic shot where the camera follows Hedwig flying through time and season towards Harry in the Hogwarts clocktower.
The company said they started working in April 2003 and completed a year later. The film was released to theaters in early June and comes out on DVD in November.

I wonder if this company will be doing the effects for GoF also. GoF will have very extensive CGI scenes.

NEATO!! I've always wondered how they did things like that, especially with the fly through time thing- and I'm taking a video editing course because of that.

Ahh, i realy cannot wait to see how they do the thestrals on screen, invisible and visible! It must be hard to do, especialy for the actors, acting with something that isnt there.
The special effects in GOF didnt realy seem that good to me, the werewolf especialy *grumbleS* but the scenic ones were brill, and the time turner was good too :)
lets hope the CGI dragons are breath taking and not CGI obvious like in other dragon films.

Yeah!!! today is my birthday!!! okay, getting back to the topic, its amazing how a full year of work was put to a film that lasted under 3 hours, and considering that there were only certain scenes that they did. It must extremely time consuming work. I wonder if they will be doing the special effects for Goblet of Fire too?

Awesome... that's a great article, I really like their website too... all the different pictures on there. I like the particular bit about how they re-did the portraits in hogwarts. The part with the fat lady was particularily good.

It is always interesting to learn more about how all of the special effects are done. In a way, they are as magical as the things that they are trying to convey. The effects get better all the time, where soon it will be really hard to distinguish from real magic.

Mmm,I don't like when they do that.It shows there's no real magic.I know I know but.... in a kind of way to have the excitement of seeing all that without worrying it was a computer or a machine who did that.

back in Soho??? where is Soho? is that the same as the Soho in New YOrk? because that is really weird then.. but I cannot wait for the DVD movie to come out.. PoA was my favorite of the three mostly because of the special effects and that all the actors have developed so much!

I did enjoy how well the special effects were, even though the script was total crap. I really wish Steve Kloves would stop writing the screenplays and let someone else do it.

Wow, I imagine that would have taken a long time to do. I heard they spent 6 months on the dementors alone. The special effects are awesome. I can't wait for the dvd, i pre-ordered it. Since I put it on 2 day shipping, i want it as soon as possible. It is going to ship on the 23rd, but since thanksgiving is the next day, it will take so much longer.
