Earlier this week Greenpeace created a petition
for fans of the Harry Potter series to ask Bloomsbury, the UK publisher, to print the next book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, on 100 percent ancient forest friendly paper.
Bloomsbury's publicity manager stated via e-mail:
Bloomsbury, at the beginning of this month, ordered exclusively Forest Stewardship Council accredited paper for the printing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
In 2003, Raincoast Books, the Canadian publisher of Harry Potter printed Order of the Phoenix on 100 percent recycled paper saving nearly 30,000 trees. If Bloomsbury complies, it will be the first major UK fiction book to be printed on ancient forest friendly paper.

That's really nice that they are using paper that saves the trees. People need to do that more often to help preserve the trees we have left. Thank you Bloomsbury!!!

That's great that they are using recycled paper. What with all the books printed, it will be worth it. By the way, are they going to use recycled paper on the American version? I hope so.

Nice to see. There will be a lot of books published, so this will obviously have an impact. I am all for it as long as it does not effect the longevity of the book - particualry hard covers.

That is an UTTERLY FANTASTIC idea! Well done Greenpeace for thinking of it! Harry Potter books have such a wide circulation that anything done by Bloomsbury to help the environment will be magnified hndreds of times. Wahey!

Wow, if they really did print HBP on forest friendly paper, that would be incredible. It would save thousands of trees, and it will probably get other publishers to print books on forest friendly paper too. Right now, I don't care what paper it's printed on, i just want to read the book!

All I have to say is Screw Greenpeace. Let the publisher do what they will. Most people that say they like Greenpeace don't know how whacked out they are. Recycling is a fine practice, but the paper is not nearly as good a quality as non-recycled. I'd rather have a 'real' paper copy.

Hey, that's cool. Alright, save the trees! I agree with you, Rioh Coinswipe - I'd rather have a book with 'real paper', it is rather better. But, It's so many pages for so many books. Millions of trees are dying. It's good that they decided to help reduce that.

I think that is a wonderful idea. We all must do our part to protect the enviroment. Printing HP on recycled paper will not change the story, so I say do it!

This is excellent progress. The Harry Potter series is so widely read that this is a very environmentally appropriate move. Also, as this news story will be widely read and hopefully will help raise awareness of old growth forest issues.
